New Balance’s Trending 1906 Sneaker Gets Three Fresh Looks to Kick off the New Year
One of 2024’s trendiest sneaker aesthetics will maintain much of its momentum going into the new year as the retro Y2K look continues to evolve.
One brand that has been especially proactive with capitalizing on the hype is New Balance, which has delivered numerous reissues and new 2000s-inspired designs that have caught on with enthusiasts and casual consumers alike. The most notable recent example has been the New Balance 1906R, which picked up where the 2002R model left off and had successful spin-off designs including the brand’s viral sneaker loafer. As the year comes to a close, the model is getting three fresh “Refined Future” looks which alter the 1906R’s traditional design.

Designated as the 1906A model, the “Refined Future” sneakers continue the theme established by New Balance footwear designer Yue Wu, which began on the 2002R. Originally erroneously nicknamed “Protection Pack” by a retailer — which then spread as the unofficial name — the sneakers are inspired by pre-loved New Balance sneakers and serve as a nod to those who proudly wear their shoes despite the blemishes and distressing picked up from normal wear.
For the 1906A, a similar pre-loved concept was employed featuring deconstructed, protruding panels, “N-Lock” webbing that looks like it’s been snipped with scissors, warped shoelaces and more.
Having already been released in a handful of colorways, three new New Balance 1906A styles are hitting retailers now, although readers may need to do some searching to track them down. The new colors include a “Great Plains” brown, “Deep Blue” and “Slate Gray/Raincloud.”
Pairs are beginning to trickle out to select retailers now. Australia’s Up There has all three pairs — though sizes are selling out quickly — for $146 each. Las Vegas retailer Feature has the “Great Plains” look in stock for $170. And resale platform Flight Club also has all three styles in stock with prices beginning at $176.
