Axed BBC series Autumnwatch gets unexpected revival

Autumnwatch will return to our screens next week, eight months after the BBC cancelled it.

The long-running nature show – which documents the changes in British wildlife across four days in Autumn – was axed earlier this year so the BBC could invest more money into its sister shows, Springwatch and Winterwatch.

However, it has now been confirmed that the Autumnwatch crew are teaming up with The One Show to bring fans a three-part special.

A trio of short films and live link-ups will air over three nights on The One Show from next Tuesday (October 24) at 7pm, with hosts Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Gillian Burke returning to capture some breathtaking footage of British wildlife.

Viewers will be shown a "variety of natural wonders, including the largest colony of Greater Horseshoe Bats in the UK, the annual red deer rut in the New Forest and the sounds of Tawny owls in Kielder Forest, Northumberland".

The One Show presenters will be live linking to Iolo Williams, who hopes to bring us live footage of the likes of sika deer, foxes, hares, as well as more from RSPB Arne in Dorset.

"We’re thrilled to collaborate with the Autumnwatch team," The One Show editor, Joanne Vaughan Jones, said in a statement.

"It’s an exciting opportunity for viewers to tune into incredible live footage of our wildlife across the UK and enjoy scenes from one of our most colourful seasons."

Strachan added: "Autumn marks a beautiful transition in nature’s calendar and I’m delighted we can continue to bring this seasonal event to viewers across the UK and capture the wonders of British wildlife."

The Autumnwatch short films will air on BBC One from Tuesday, October 24 to Thursday, October 26 at 7pm.
