The Axe Western: DJ-approved Western food with over 39 affordable mains in Ang Mo Kio

When we think of affordable Western food, our thoughts normally drift to well-known chains like Astons or Saizeriya. However, few know about the gem The Axe Western hidden in Ang Mo Kio

Those who follow LOVE972 DJ Dennis Chew may have already added this place to their to-go list, thanks to the DJ’s stellar review on his Instagram post. With such an established person raving on about the tenderness and flavour of a simple chicken chop, my curiosity was indeed piqued.

Run by a trio of siblings, The Axe Western was started during the Coronavirus pandemic, which was quite an intriguing business choice. Here’s the kicker: 2 of the founders are actually twins labelled as rather attractive. Perhaps, some eye candy makes the food all the more tastier.

With a staggeringly long selection, even I (who has chicken chop as my go-to Western dish) was confused about what to choose. Even classic chicken chop had 9 different variations and combinations to choose from. Talk about spoilt for choice!

From fried rice to even different combo meals with all sorts of protein duos, there is every possible type of Western food to suit all tastes.

Having a slight inkling that the place would be crowded during lunchtime, I arrived in the late morning to miss out on the lunch crowd. Based on my visit, my guess was accurate — there was a thin crowd in the morning but the place became extremely busy by the early afternoon.

What I tried at The Axe Western

My original plan was to get the Grilled Pork Tomahawk (S$16.90), having heard that it is their speciality item. However, that plan was quickly dismissed when the cashier informed me of the 30-minute waiting time due to the thickness of the pork.

Seeing my dilemma, the cashier was extra helpful in recommending some dishes, which is how I settled on getting the Cheesy Chicken Chop (S$8.50).

The Axe Western — Cheese Stretch

To be frank, I was expecting some nacho cheese sauce drizzled on top, thus you can imagine my gleeful surprise when it was actually torched mozzarella cheese! With quite the cheese stretch, the chicken chop tasted so much better with the indulgent topping. I loved that the serving was so generous, too!

A word of advice would be to wrap the cheese stretch around every bite of chicken, making for a satisfying and moreish meal. I was almost disappointed when I gobbled down the whole chicken chop within 15 minutes.

To my surprise, the chicken chop wasn’t ordinary, either. At first bite, the chicken chop connoisseur in me could tell that the chicken chop used at The Axe Western was not the typical one that is vacuum sealed with it already marinated. The tender flesh was wholly satisfying, which is a testament to how fresh the chicken was.

Pasta
Pasta

With the choice of carbs being either Pasta or Waffle Fries, I chose the former to see how the pasta was. Flabbergasted at the huge portions, thrifty me was pleased to get all that bang for my buck.

Taste-wise, I would say that it doesn’t taste like your classic aglio olio. It looked slightly darker and on the less oily side, which definitely shows the effort put into the noodles. I even thoroughly enjoyed the spicy kick and loved that the whole dish was not too heavy on the taste buds.

Salad
Salad

I usually avoid salad in Western food joints since a good majority of stalls just serve old lettuce drenched in dressing. On the other hand, this one was especially refreshing. The sour tang from the ambiguous orange salad dressing made the lettuce taste fresher, making for a fantastic reliever from its 2 oily counterparts.

Final thoughts

With how much I loved the Cheesy Chicken Chop, I am truly worried that I will not be able to return to my ordinary chicken chop days. Will I ever come back to try the Pork Tomahawk? Oddly enough, the answer is no. With how satisfied I am with what I tried today, it’s safe to say that it has become my favourite.

Expected damage: S$6 – S$16.90 per pax
