Over the years since rising to fame in the early aughts, Lavigne has become known for her punk rock-inspired style that often includes edgy black boots and creepers. Recently, the “Sk8r Boi” singer wore patent leather thigh-high boots equipped with a massive platform sole at a pre-Grammy celebration on Feb. 3. Meanwhile, she slipped into a pair of sleek pointy black leather stiletto boots that hit just above the knee at Canada’s Walk of Fame Gala on Dec. 2, 2023. She also wore a similar style of combat boots to attend Christian Siriano’s New York Fashion Week show on Sept. 9, 2023.

About the Shoes:

Lavigne’s grungy, 90s-esque combat boots featured smooth leather uppers, silver eyelets, and lug soles. They had a slight platform and a chunky block heel. The style measured over 3 inches in height and was complete with a medial zipper intended to promote easy on-and-off functionality.

Brief History of Combat Boots:

Combat boots became a staple around the ’60s and ’70s as Dr. Martens were embraced by Britain’s punk scene. The enthusaism for the style spread to the United States by the ’80s, due in large part due to the popularity of bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash. In the ’90s, combat boots became a mainstay among members of Seattle’s grunge scene and they would appear on the runway at the Perry Ellis spring ’93 show. Marc Jacobs, the brand’s women’s creative director at the time, sent models like Naomi Campbell stomping down the catwalk in the boots. The show famously ended up getting Jacobs fired but also launched his carreer.
