The store was first opened by Francis and Antony Tan at Purvis Street and went by Hock Lam Street Popular Beef Kway Teow. Now, Francis’s son, Edwin Tan runs the store at North Canal Road. The shop continues to preserve their family’s long-standing beef noodle history that Edwin’s grandfather, Tan Chee Kok began in 1911.

According to an article by The Straits Times, both Authentic Hock Lam Street Popular Beef Kway Teow and Hock Lam Beef (last outlet closed as of 2019) claim to be the true successors of the “original” from 1911. With their ongoing family feud, it is still unclear  who the true “Hock Lam Beef Noodle” is. For most of us, what’s important is how good the noodles taste.

In the case of Authentic Hock Lam Street Popular Beef Kway Teow, many love their Supreme Mix with Tendon (S$10.90 for regular, and S$12.90 for large). Diners can choose between the soup and dry version and both are packed with ingredients. The thick-cut kway teow and sliced beef and meatballs are loved by fans of the store and said to be extremely rich and hearty.

The dry version of their noodles come drenched in a thick, flavourful sauce and is topped with pickled salted vegetables to balance everything out. If you want something lighter, their Brasised Beef & Tripe (S$8.90 for regular, and S$10.90 for large) will be more up your alley.

Head over to the store’s new location at 13 North Canal Road for your dose of traditional beef noodles. “Original” or not, they’ll be sure to satiate your beef noodle cravings.
