Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday 8 September at Balmoral, Scotland, at the age of 96.

Members of the royal family including her son the King, and grandsons Prince William and Prince Harry, flew to Balmoral before her passing was announced later on the Thursday evening.

The Queen had reigned for over 70 years, celebrating her historic Platinum Jubilee earlier this year, and leaves behind an irreplaceable legacy.

A funeral service to commemorate her passing and celebrate her remarkable life is set to take place in the weeks following her passing. In the meantime, books of condolences have been arranged at locations nationwide, as well as online, for members of the public to sign in her memory.

Will the Queen lie-in-state?

Her majesty will lie-in-state, which means her coffin will rest at Westminster Hall in the days before the funeral so that members of the public can come to pay their respects. After being transferred from Scotland, an official procession will bring her from Buckingham Palace to lie at Westminster Hall.

It is expected that members of the royal family including the King and Queen Consort will be in attendance at the funeral, as well as Prime Minister Liz Truss, various heads of state and other important guests.

Will there be a bank holiday for the Queen’s funeral?

It is expected that the day of the funeral will be declared a bank holiday, meaning schools are likely to be closed, although this has not yet been officially confirmed by the palace.

The funeral will be televised so people across the country and worldwide will be able to watch the service. It will be broadcast by the BBC in the UK as well as other channels globally.
