I Asked 3 Food Editors To Name the Best Frozen Pizza—They All Said the Same Brand

It is also the winner of Simply Recipes' best frozen foods awards.

Frozen pizza gets a bad rap. It can be dry and uninspired, with a cardboard-like crust and unpronounceable additives that rob the pie of its essential goodness. Usually, at our house, frozen pizza is more of a "Plan B," meaning something went amiss with our original dinner plans, and I say, “Well, we’ve got a frozen pizza in the chest freezer, I guess we’ll do that instead.”

That shouldn’t be the case! Pizza, after all, is so glorious and universally beloved that there should be a frozen store-bought option that does justice to the best restaurant versions.

I asked some of my food editor friends to point me in the direction of the best frozen pies, and they all said the same brand.

The Best Frozen Pizza, According to Food Editors

The editors I spoke to are the first to admit that frozen pizza isn’t exactly their go-to dinner, but all of them raved about Genio Della Pizza, which is made in the Neapolitan style in the wood-fired ovens of Northern Italy before being shipped straight to your freezer.

“I’m not a big frozen pizza person, but Genio really impressed me,” says Lucy. “The toppings held up, and the pizzas were not at all dry. The crust had that satisfying combination of crisp and chew that you get with a good freshly made slice.”

For Myo, these frozen pizzas border on the magical. “It’s almost incomprehensible how Genio has been able to nail frozen pizza. The crust is so chewy and perfectly salty—the ultimate premium pizza.”

Genio also took the top honors in Simply Recipes’ 2024 Freezies Awards, where tasters noted the exceptional quality of the dough—a crust with a nice chew and tangy sourdough flavor. The brand makes four varieties of pizza, including Margherita, Marinara, Bianca, and Broccoli Rabe with black olives. They can be tricky to track down—look for them in Whole Foods Markets or shop online.

Arie keeps it real, saying, “I'm not going to pretend that it's better than homemade pizza straight out of the oven or the pizza from your local pizzaiolo, but it's pretty damn close.” For Arie, Genio excels in every category: “the chewy crust, the high-quality toppings, the sauce—everything.” She recommends giving the Bianca and Margherita pies a try, adding, “The Genio pizza options are in a league of their own."
