Ahead of the release of her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, in March, Ariana Grande has opened up about the experiences and emotions that informed the record's music.

Speaking on The Zach Sang Show, Grande explained that the heartbreak which resulted from her 2023 divorce from real estate agent Dalton Gomez inspired the record, and that the pain of the experience accelerated her return to the studio.

She admitted that she cried writing it and said it will chronicle her 'hardest moments of loss and grief' but insisted that it was not a revenge record.

'I wrote some of [the songs] when I was very emotional. And then there are bops that are more fun. Actually, even some of the bops I cried writing,’ she said. ‘I wanted to make sure that it was what I intended, which, even at my most heartbroken or pained moments of the past few years, there was so much kindness, there was so much love, there was so much honesty, transparency and respect. So even at the hardest moments of the loss and the grief that you hear on some of the album, there was so much love and transparency.'

She continued: 'It wasn’t like a ‘F**k you’ at all, ever. That was a tricky balance for me because I definitely had some sessions where I was writing more emotionally and reactively, but that’s also very human, so I didn’t want to erase all of it.'

Eternal Sunshine marks Grande’s first new album since 2020’s Positions. The R.E.M Beauty founder released her first single from the album, 'yes, and?', on January 12 and it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The track, which was accompanied by a kitsch music video inspired by Paula Abdul's 1988 'Cold Hearted', is a nod to the criticism Grande has received online over her perceived sudden weight loss and her reported relationship with her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater, who was rumoured to still be married when their relationship began.

In a line in the song, Grande sings: 'Now I'm so done with caring what you think, no I won’t hide underneath your own projections or change my most authentic life.'

The Wicked star has also released the full track list for Eternal Sunshine, with the only feature on the record coming courtesy of her 'Nonna' — her grandmother — who will appear on the single, 'Ordinary Things.'
