'Fixer Upper' Star Clint Harp Sued Over an Accident at His Vacation Rental House in Waco
A Texas woman is suing Fixer Upper star Clint Harp after she had a “violent fall” during her stay at his Waco-based vacation rental house, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.
The home was first renovated for the Harp family by Chip and Joanna Gaines during season 1 of their HGTV show, but the famous woodworker now uses it as a rental property. It’s located next to his shop, Harp Design Co., and is nearby the Gaineses’ Magnolia Market at the Silos.
According to the lawsuit obtained by the Tribune, guest Tamra Rivera is seeking from $200,000 to $1 million for her "severe injuries" obtained during a stay in October 2016, when she and four other women rented the house to attend Magnolia Silobration. She reportedly fell while walking down the staircase, which was allegedly “out of code and in violation of industry standards regarding stairways and handrails,” according to the suit.
The Tribune reports that as part of a major renovation, the house needed to meet the compliance regulations set by the Texas Accessibility Standards, which states that handrails must be provided on both sides of the staircase and that all steps on a flight of stairs must have uniform riser heights and uniform tread depths. The staircase in question allegedly does not meet these requirements. The suit also alleges that the Harp House is still listed on rental websites like Airbnb despite the “unreasonably dangerous condition” that it remains in.
A spokeswoman at Harp Design Co. told the Waco Tribune that Harp declined to comment, and also declined to say if he was represented by an attorney. Houston attorney Brand J. Stogner, who is reportedly representing Rivera, did not return the outlet’s calls on Monday to specify details from the suit.
