These 'Captain Marvel' Details Have Introduced a Big New 'Avengers 4' Theory
Two months before the climactic ending of this chapter of the Avengers, Captain Marvel will make her debut to change everything. In the closing moments of Avengers: Infinity War, Nick Fury sent out a distress signal to Captain Marvel before Thanos destroyed half the universe. So the biggest cliffhanger in superhero movie history leaves it all up to Brie Larson's new character.

While fans have spent the last few months speculating (and speculating, and speculating), the best new information we've received so far came yesterday with new plot details and new images from the upcoming Captain Marvel. Larson's Carol Danvers is a half-Kree, half-human pilot who is trying to come to terms with her alien abilities and human flaws. In the film, we won't see a traditional origin story. Rather, Carol already has her powers and has left to join the Kree military.
As EW explains the plot of the upcoming film:
Carol finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. And she’s got a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls-the notorious Marvel baddies made all the more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader Talos, who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.
This phrasing "a Skrull invasion of Earth" already has fans theorizing that this will introduce Marvel's "Secret Invasion" storyline. As the Marvel Wiki explains:
After experimenting on the Illuminati, the Skrulls replaced various super-humans since before the events of House of M, beginning with Spider-Woman (replaced by a fake attempt by the Skrulls to restore her powers), Hank Pym, Black Bolt (replaced when the Illuminati attacked the Skrulls), Elektra, various agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Edwin Jarvis, Dum Dum Dugan, etc. After the Civil War, the Skrulls intended on implanting a Skrull in every 50-state superhero team. It is unknown if that had actually occurred or how far they got with their insurgents.
Now, with this in mind-and Captain Marvel taking place in the '90s-fans already believe that one of our current Avengers might be a Skrull in disguise. It's unclear what, exactly, that would mean for Avengers 4, but it certainly would introduce a tantalizing new conflict for the future of the MCU.
What's also key is the introduction of the Starforce, which includes Mar-Vell (Jude Law), Ronan the Accuser (who you might remember from Guardians of the Galaxy), Korath the Pursuer, Att-Lass, and Carol Danvers. While the storylines of the Secret Invasion and the "Infinity Gauntlet" don't overlap in the comics, Marvel's movies have been picking from various different stories for its overall cinematic universe. Specifically, Mar-Vell (the original Captain Marvel), who in the comics was often enlisted to stop Thanos' plans and steal the Cosmic Cuge (aka the Tesseract/Space Infinity Stone in the movies). In the comics, Carol is a protege of Mar-Vell and eventually takes over the mantle of Captain Marvel. Many fans speculate that the Starforce is what inspired S.H.I.E.L.D. and explains Nick Fury's association with Captain Marvel.
