Anthony Wong not surprised over HKFA postponement

30 Sep – Anthony Wong is not at all surprised over news that the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards has been postponed to 2022.

As reported on Mingpao, the actor whose performance in the Steve Yuen movie, "Declared Legally Dead" was universally praised as worthy of another Best Actor nomination, stated that he doesn't think he would get nominated even if the awards are held next year.

"Because of recent developments surrounding China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the film industries of the three places have separated. Now there is no friendship and camaraderie like before," he said.

Anthony, who is known for being outspoken against the central government, stated that Hong Kong artistes are no longer free to speak their mind on stage nowadays, and that audiences are too afraid to react.

"No one wants the Hong Kong film industry to turn out this way. I hope it was as prosperous as before. There are many films, but [they're no longer the same]. When there is no desire and creativity, the environment doesn't exist and therefore the industry also ceases to exist," he added.
