Anthony Hopkins has announced a new career move away from film.

The two-time Oscar winner, who is best known for playing Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, spoke to People to reveal that he is writing his biography.

He described the writing experience as "a weird process."

"I realised how I'm blessed with one thing. Maybe it's my actor's brain. I do have quite a memory. I remember the days of months in the years," he added, explaining why he has chosen to write his life story.

Hopkins went on to detail some of struggles he has faced in his life, which are likely to be touched on in the book. "I was drinking myself to death. One day I had a moment of sheer fright. I got some help. That was 48 years ago," he explained.

He added: "I'm just fortunate. I went through ups and downs and depressions and despairs and anger and all that stuff, but gradually the last few years [I've been] thinking, 'Well, I'm still here.'"

Fans of the actor will be pleased to hear that Hopkin's wife Stella Arroyave is also memorialising his life with a documentary.

The War and Peace star confirmed that his wife has "carte blanche to [cover] everything," though admitted he doesn't know how far along she is with the project.

Hopkins recently starred alongside Operation Mincemeat's Johnny Flynn in One Life, which tells the true story of real-life hero Nicholas Winton. The humanitarian notably helped rescue hundreds of Jewish children after they had fled Nazi persecution in the lead up to and during the Second World War.

The film also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Alias actress Lena Olin, Jonathan Pryce and Samantha Spiro.

One Life is in cinemas now.
