Annie Liu: Friends were worried of me doing a TVB drama
26 Jun – Taiwanese actress Annie Liu admitted that a lot of people were worried about her when she was first offered a role in the TVB drama, "Deep in the Realm of Conscience".
The actress, who sat down for an interview with Mingpao recently, shared that while she has starred in many period dramas before, including the 2011 hit, "Scarlet Heart" ("Bu Bu Jing Xin"), the people around her were concerned that she may not be able to cope with TVB's infamous hectic filming schedule.
"But I have always wanted to work with TVB and try my hand at filming Hong Kong dramas. I've run the marathon, so I thought I should be able to cope [with the schedule]," she said.
Annie admitted that although she was excited about the challenging nature of the filming at first, she realised how difficult it was after several months, especially when she had to change into a lot of costumes, wear heavy wigs and headdresses and perform thoroughly in Cantonese.
"I have done Hong Kong movies before, but they gave me the advantage of speaking Mandarin. But I had to speak Cantonese in the drama, and it became the biggest challenge. I spent a lot of my time learning and understanding the language. Nancy Wu, who also played a role in the drama, helped me a lot with my pronunciation," she said.
As for her heavy headdress, Annie admitted that one needs to wear a cervical collar to decompress after wearing it all day long so as not to end up seeing a chiropractor for treatment.
However, it seemed that all her hard work has paid off, as the drama has received more than a billion hits on the mainland streaming site, Tencent.
