Angelina Jolie to Star in Maria Callas Biopic for Pablo Larraín

Angelina Jolie is set to star in a biopic about Maria Callas, the renowned and influential opera singer for director Pablo Larraín.

The script currently titled “Maria,” was written by Steven Knight (“Spencer,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Eastern Promises”).

The biopic, based on true accounts, will tell the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge,” Jolie said in a statement. “Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”

Larraín added: “Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”

Larraín most recently directed “Spencer,” a film about Princess Diana that netted Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination. Larraín has also teamed with Netflix for “El Conde,” a fantastical dark comedy revolving around Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.
