The feminine silhouette of Andrew Gn
Singaporean Paris-based fashion designer Andrew Gn cut his teeth at Central Saint Martins in London before opening his atelier in Paris in 1996. The designer even learned the ropes as an assistant to Parisian couturier Emanuel Ungaro. His hard work paid off when his designs were shown at Paris Fashion Week and the rest, as they say, is history.
Gn has been dressing royalties and celebrities such as singer Beyonce and even Kate Middleton and Queen Rania. In an interview with SCMP, he was quoted as saying, “When you are brought up in Singapore, which is a port city and a hub for multiculturalism, this has always been a part of me. So it comes very naturally to me to integrate my lived experiences and my memories in my designs, whether it is a vibrant colour like the perfect shade of red, or a recurring motif like corals or a dragon.”
To commemorate his stellar career and designs, Singapore's Asian Civilisations Museum even curated an exhibition entitled, 'Andrew Gn: Fashioning Singapore and the World', which will run until the 17th of September.

The sensual aesthetics of Grace Ling
Like most of us who are pursuing different interests and passions, Singaporean designer Grace Ling first stepped out as a model and actress before deciding to concentrate on her love for tailoring. This emerging designer cut her teeth at The Row and Thom Browne before launching her eponymous line. Informed by her background in fashion and sculpture, she takes a multifaceted approach to design with a focus on sustainable practices, like a sampling process that creates less waste. Jennifer Lopez and Karlie Kloss are both fans of the brand’s bold tailoring.
In an interview with Vogue Singapore, the 26-year-old designer shared her inspiration: "The human body is a language that transcends all cultures and backgrounds. I wanted to create wit and light-hearted humour without having to explain much. I was first inspired by a psychological phenomenon often referred to as ‘anthropomorphism’, which refers to the attribution of human characteristics to inanimate objects. From an absurdist perspective, I wanted to see how inanimate sculptures can trigger an emotional response."
