Amanda Seyfried explains what needs to happen for us to see Mamma Mia! 3
Amanda Seyfried shared her thoughts on Mamma Mia! 3 during the red carpet for Variety’s Power Of Women event in New York last Thursday (5 May).
Mamma Mia! (2008) follows a young bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried), who invites three of her mother Donna's (Meryl Streep) ex-lovers to her upcoming wedding, with the possibility that any of them could be her father. When they all show up, trouble unfolds to the tune of ABBA's greatest hits.
Owing to its commercial success, the musical rom-com film welcomed a sequel in 2018, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. While the first film was based on a Broadway musical, the sequel expanded on the original plot, along with more ABBA songs. This time, Sophie prepares for the grand reopening of her mother's hotel as she learns more about her mother's past.
The third instalment was then announced in 2020, confirmed to feature new ABBA songs. But the production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
When asked what needs to happen for Mamma Mia 3 to come to fruition, Seyfried told Variety, “Somebody's got to come up with an idea. I just don't know where that idea goes. Like when you come up with an idea. Boom. That's the idea. That's what should happen. Where do you send it? Right? I don't know what to do.”
“I mean, who cares? The plot doesn't even matter at this point,” she continued. “ABBA's got new songs…throw them in there. Get the cast together again. Meryl will absolutely come back for the entirety of it. Or else.”
She added, “It's very indulgent for us. We just want to go back to Greece and dance around. And then people will love that. So, you know, we'll be doing a service to ourselves and to the fans.”
