Amanda Seyfried Auditioned to Play Glinda in the Wicked Movie

Amanda Seyfried says the hardest role she's ever tackled was portraying Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. But, all that work has been rewarded—she scored her first Emmy nomination for her portrayal of the disgraced Theranos founder.

Seyfried recently shared that while playing Holmes, she was also auditioning for Wicked.

“I have dreams that I’m still auditioning for Wicked," she told Backstage. "Last summer while I was playing Elizabeth [on The Dropout], on the weekends I was auditioning in person to play Glinda in the movie version of Wicked — because I wanted it that much that I was like, ‘You know what? Yeah, I have to play the last scene of The Dropout on Tuesday. I’ll give my Sunday to you.’ I literally bent over backwards while playing the hardest role of my life."

Though Seyfried undeniably has the musical chops for Glinda, the role ultimately went to Ariana Grande.

Yet, Seyfried says, she's grateful for the audition process. "I think it also taught me how far I’ve come as a singer, which I really wanted to prove. Because ever since Les Miz, I was like, I need to be better. I need to do better. So whatever comes next in terms of musicals, I’m finally prepared."

Seyfried has starred in a few musical projects over her career, including Mamma Mia! as Sophie Sheridan and Les Misérables as Cosette.

Wicked will star Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. A few months ago, Jon M. Chu announced that the Wicked adaptation will be split into two films—part one will premiere in December 2024, and part two in December 2025.
