Amal Clooney dazzles in Oscar de la Renta during first visit to Toronto

This past weekend, one of the world’s most visible (and fashionable) advocates for social justice was in Toronto for the 2018 Luminato Festival.
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, dressed in a multicoloured wrap dress from Canadian designer Tanya Taylor, introduced human rights attorney, Amal Clooney, for a night of conversation ranging from everything from the U.S border crisis and feminism, to life as a mother and wife to actor, George Clooney.
“Feminism to me is women having choices,” the 40-year-old Lebanese born attorney said. “In some parts of Africa, you’re fighting not to be genitally mutilated. In some parts of Asia, you’re fighting to choose who you marry. In the West, you’re still fighting for equal pay for equal work.”
Clad in a £3,458 dress by Oscar de la Renta, the evening marked Clooney’s first visit to Toronto and was made extra special by the inclusion of her father-in-law, broadcaster, Nick Clooney, as host.
During the course of the discussion, Clooney addressed how her marriage to a Hollywood heavy-weight impacted her career “dramatically.”
With Clooney now appearing on red carpets, co-hosting lavish events such as the Met Gala and appearing on the cover of Vogue magazine, the mother of one-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, is trying to use her life in the spotlight for good.
“You can turn a spotlight and put it on something important, and you can help people by raising awareness,” she said. “The worst things happen in darkness, and as a famous U.S. jurist said, ‘Sunlight is the best disinfectant.’”
Clooney also told the audience that she was heading straight to the airport to see her children.
“I have some twins to attend to,” she said. “This is my longest absence from them, which is two nights. But it was worth it to come to Toronto.”
