If you’re worried that the advancements in artificial intelligence are dragging us all towards a Skynet-style apocalypse, then rest assured.

Apparently, we’ll just be able to ‘turn it off’ before our robot overlords decide that we’re all to be exterminated en masse.

That’s the bullishly confident view of Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet.

Discussing AI technology with folks at the annual Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, he said: “We’ve all seen these movies.

“To be clear, we’re not talking about consciousness, we’re not talking about souls, we’re not talking about independent creativity.

“We’ll make make sure that people know how to turn this stuff off should we get to that point.”

That’s what this dude probably thought…

Google is among the tech companies developing various AI applications including automatic responses to instant messaging, as well as the advances it is making with its DeepMind AI project.

Last year, it’s AlphaGo computer program became the first machine to beat a professional human player of the ancient Chinese game Go, which is certainly not setting mankind on a slippery slope.

He continued: “There are a large number of issues of automation from a military context, and Google has taken a very strong position in not being involved in that.

“But remember that for every offensive scenario you can think of, you can also think of a defensive scenario that’s just as intelligent.

“And remember, these systems learn by training, so the more examples they have, the more they can protect you.”

So, in short, none of that Terminator stuff is going to happen, so we can all rest easy… probably.
