Ah Girls Go Army actor’s Bak Chor Mee stall, San Hu Minced Meat Noodle, shuts down
You might remember 26-year-old Jasper Choong from the scenes of Jack Neo’s latest flick to hit the screens: Ah Girls Go Army. He plays the supporting role of Sergeant Ken, and while his time in the movie isn’t much, his boyish charms sure are memorable. What you might have a lesser idea about is his hawker food venture through his stall San Hu Minced Meat Noodle. It has had the unfortunate fate of now shutting its doors permanently to the public since July 30 2022.
Created with the vision of bringing Malaysian-style Bak Chor Mee to the table, Choong joined hands with his mother and another business partner for the establishment. It was located at the kopitiam that’s near Tiong Bahru MRT station, becoming quite popular despite its pretty recent launch in April 2022.
A Malaysian native, Choong prided himself on bringing the essence of his heritage to good old Bak Chor Mee. The simple concept includes dry and soup versions of the central dish. One of the most famous dishes included the San Hu Signature Bak Chor Mee (S$6.50) that came with their signature dark sauce, fish cake slices, fish balls, homemade chilli, braised mushrooms, a generous serving of lard and minced pork. It’s not all about the Bak, the Laksa (S$4.50) is not to be missed. Cockles, egg, fried fish ball and tau pok was soaked in a flavourful broth and was a crowd favourite.
On their Facebook page, they detail the reason behind their too-soon closure. Due to insufficient manpower behind the scenes and the rising costs of maintaining a small-scale business in the city, they regretfully had to bid farewell. Hopefully stalls with something unique to provide in the lion city find ways to survive in the future. Until then, we hold hope.
