Ah Boys To Men 4’s only female star can kick ass for real
Jack Neo’s army franchise is back, this time with Hong Kong TV actress Apple Chan as Lieutenant Zhang Xin Yi, the Ah Boys’ superior in the armour unit.
Faced with such an attractive madam, the boys are all a twitter at first – until they realise that Lieutenant Zhang is by no means a typical specimen of the weaker sex. In one of the scenes, she even (literally!) beats up I. P. Man (played by Noah Yap) in the ring.
At the Ah Boys To Men 4 press conference held at the One Farrer Hotel & Spa on Tuesday, 28-year-old Apple, who is Hong Kong-born and Singapore-raised, shared with the media that she did not have a body double in her fight scene.

“My father and my eldest uncle are both tai quan exponents, so I was influenced by them from a young age. My father taught me the basics when I was a little, so I know how to move like a fighter,” she said. Her silver screen debut was Muay Thai Girls in 2015.
Director Jack Neo was full of praise for the newcomer, rating her performance at 86%. “I don’t want people to say that I’m biased towards her, but she gets an extra 6% for her martial arts skills. Her agility makes her stand out,” he explained. The other actors were all rated 80% by Neo, with the exception of Maxi Lim, who received 83%, and Noah Yap, who was awarded a high of 90%.

“Say what you will about Noah, but he is really the only one who can pull off those asinine jokes in the movie,” said Neo with a chuckle.
Yap, 23, made headlines for the wrong reasons last year in March when he was thrown into detention barracks for using cannabis. His sentence was nine months long.

The boys bantered with one another easily as they fielded questions from the media and posed for photographs. The very first “ah boy”, Wang Weiliang, who plays street-smart Lobang King in the franchise, was also joined by Tosh Zhuang, Joshua Tan, Jaspers Lai, Charlie Goh, Ryan Lian, Ben Logan Sng, Kishan J., Hafiz Aziz, Foo Chay Yeow, and Hanrey Low at the press conference held in One Farrer Hotel & Spa.
