‘Adam Ruins Everything’ Including The Oscars – With A Little Help From Pete Hammond
I made my comedy series acting debut this week in the season premiere of truTV’s hit sketch comedy/educational hybrid Adam Ruins Everything, starring Adam Conover as a guy who likes to correct myths about various things in society that we only think we know about. Topics he took to debunking in Season 1 included cars, security, work, voting, nutrition, sex, death and others. The second-season premiere in which I appear as Deadline Awards Columnist Pete Hammond (clever, Adam) is called “Adam Ruins Hollywood.” What the show does is mix so-called experts (me, I guess) with actors as they take on various sacred cows and other topics to set the record straight. The episode aired in its regular slot Tuesday night at 10, but if you missed it it’s airing again this Sunday night on truTV (check your listings).
The segment I’m in takes on awards season and skewers it nicely. Producers actually called me during the past Oscar season and wanted to know everything about how it really works, lots of inside info and the like. Later they asked me to appear on the show, where I would be disguised as an Oscar-type statuette, deep undercover. It was shot completely in greenscreen on a downtown L.A. studio soundstage, so I could be miniaturized. Now I know what it must be like to act in Avatar sequels. It turned out pretty well, though I am not sure the Academy or the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will love it. But hey, it’s all done in fun.
The show originally started as a College Humor web series and has graduated to cable. As Deadline reported late last month, among topics in the new season up for ridicule will be the presidential election. Can’t wait. To see my segment, click on the link above.
