Local actor Edmund Chen revealed on Wednesday (11 July) how his life was thrown into chaos recently when he became a cybercrime victim.

Speaking at a cyber security event, Chen told the audience his troubles began after he divulged his password to a stranger online who claimed to know personal details about him and his family.

“My friends started receiving emails from ‘me’ stating that I was in trouble overseas and requesting money. It was shocking to see the interconnectivity between our online information and daily activities and how it makes us vulnerable to cyber crime,” Chen said.

“Cyber crime is not a generation-specific issue. It is real and can target you at any point of your life,” he added.

Chen was not the only one in his family to have faced issues online – his daughter was cyberbullied by some of her close friends in secondary school.

“As a parent, I was saddened and shocked that this had occurred. During that period, my daughter refused to go to school and even became sceptical of relationships,” the 57-year-old said.

The event highlighted the 2017 Norton Cyber Security Insights Report, where findings showed one in two Singaporeans have identified themselves as cyber victims, with most victims being millennials.

Chen is partnering Norton Singapore to raise awareness on the habits and downsides of Singaporeans’ online behaviour.
