Today in news we literally thought we would never be typing, studies have shown that eating your boogers may be good for you. Like, really good for you.

If you’re like us, you’re probably thinking, “Um, please explain.” (Actually, you’re probably thinking, “GROSS!” and then “please explain,” and that’s valid. But we digress). According to both Harvard and MIT researchers, our boogers contain “a rich reservoir of good bacteria,” which, when ingested, can help build up our immune systems.

One of the studies authors, Dr. Scott Napper, said, “Nature pushes us to do different things because it is to our advantage to have certain behaviors, to consume different types of foods. So maybe when you have an urge to pick your nose and eat it, you should just go with nature.”

Dr. Napper went on to say, “From an evolutionary perspective, we evolved under very dirty conditions and maybe this desire to keep our environment and our behaviors sterile isn’t actually working to our advantage.”

Basically, all of the antibacterial sprays, lotions, and wipes might actually be weakening our immune systems overall. Additionally, another expert went as far as to say that people who pick their noses are healthier, happier, and overall more in tune with their bodies.

According to The Telegraph, research in this area is so compelling that scientists are working on a “mucous toothpaste and chewing gum” to harness the health benefits of boogers.

Okay, we’re all for science and research, but this is our honest reaction right now:

So, uh, happy picking, we guess?
