ABC Buys Vacation Comedy From Hilary Winston Based on Norwegian Format
It’s only September, but ABC already is thinking about Next Summer, buying a single-camera comedy from Bad Teacher creator Hilary Winston, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV, where Winston is under an overall deal, is the studio.
Next Summer, in development for next season, is based on the Norwegian comedy series of the same name, local title Neste Sommer, which has aired on TVN for four seasons. It is set in a summer vacation community and is about the complexity of evolving family relationships.
Winston is writing the adaptation, which she is executive producing with Kaplan, Wendi Trilling and Dana Honor as well as Olav Øen, Thomas Giertsen & Espen Huseby of Nordic World, which distributes the original series, created by Simen Alsvik and Lars Gudmestad and produced by Feel Good Scene. Last season, Community and Happy Endings alumna Winson wrote and executive produced the CBS/Sony TV comedy pilot My Time/Your Time, which is being redeveloped by the network. She is repped by UTA, Rise Management and attorney Jared Levine.
The format is repped by Paradigm.
At ABC, Kapital Entertainment also has Sam Sklaver’s comedy Charlie Foxtrot, which has a put pilot commitment, the DJ Nash comedy Losing It, dramedy House of Moore, and Laura Krafft comedy The Favorite. Additionally, the company has new ABC comedy series American Housewife and returning drama series Secrets & Lies. All projects are with ABC Studios.
Norway, once overshadowed by its Scandinavian neighbors whose formats had broken into the U.S. marketplace, has been gaining ground. Drama Eyewitness, an adaptation of a Norwegian series, premieres on USA on October 16.
