Japanese drama 99.9 Criminal Lawyer, which stars Arashi’s Jun Matsumoto as Hiroto Miyama, is a popular series that first aired in 2016, and later introduced a second season in 2018. Its latest instalment is a movie, scheduled to release in Japan this winter. Although no specific date has been announced yet, the movie has recently given its fans a sneak peek with a 30-second teaser trailer.

The drama follows the story of Hiroto Miyama, a criminal lawyer who pursues the truth for the 0.1 per cent out of Japan’s 99.9 per cent conviction rate. Simply put, the drama works on the premise that the lawyers usually do not take up criminal cases because it is akin to fighting a losing battle. But Miyama chooses to accept these cases, believing there is another side to the crime. Although it has a seemingly serious theme, 99.9 Criminal Lawyer is actually known for its corny dad jokes.

The movie will see Matsumoto reprising his role, along with Teruyuki Kagawa (known for his antagonist role in Japanese drama Hanzawa Naoki) as Atsuhiro Sada, Miyama’s senior in the law firm. Joining them as a new cast member is Hana Sugisaki (known for starring in the second season of Boys Over Flowers), who will portray novice lawyer Honoka Kono.

The teaser trailer may not have disclosed much, but at least we know the movie will not lose its comedic elements. In the opening of the teaser trailer, Sada can be heard saying “Stop it!” and “I can’t see,” as Miyama cheekily uses his palm to cover “his eyes” (the camera). At the end, Miyama also showcases his dad jokes by making a pun on the word “crayon”, while holding a box of crayons.

Currently, there is still a lot of mystery to 99.9 Criminal Lawyer: The Movie, especially its plot. The tagline on its teaser poster, which read, “Miyama is finally defeated!?” seems to imply Miyama will be dealing with a troublesome criminal case. Let’s hope more details will be revealed soon!
