90s maxi skirts are here to stay – and Cosmo's fashion team is divided

Fashion trends in their very nature are divisive. After all, not everyone will like or suit the same styles – which can only be a good thing IMO. We're all about celebrating individuality and diversity.

One of this summer's biggest trends that is proving more controversial than expected is the maxi skirt. Here, two members of the Cosmo UK Fashion Team debate the pros and cons of the love-it-or-hate-it skirt length.

For:

When it comes to reviving throwback fashion trends, I tend to need a bit of convincing. But the '90s maxi skirt is an exception. As a kid, I remember Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow repping the style on-screen and on the red carpet and thinking it was the *height* of elegance. I even remember longing for the day that I too would be grown-up enough to wear the low-rise maxi.

That time has now come. Admittedly, I don’t idolise the trend the way I used to – belly button-skimming waistlines are a general ‘pass’ for me – but the fact that it’s making a comeback still warms my nostalgic soul. As for how to style it in 2023, try teaming with a matching tie-front top, à la Paloma Elsesser, or an oversized statement tee for effortlessly cool off-duty vibes.

Against:

Despite the many forms skirts have taken over my lifetime, I’ve always felt our relationship was best cultivated from afar (aka me appreciating them safely from the sidelines in my shorts). That is until the '90s maxi made its return down the runway, and the incredible street-style snaps of folks in ankle-grazing designs had me thinking that, maybe, I could make it work.

One long-skirt-wearing stint later and it’s official: I can’t. Not only did I have to give up my impatient-commuter vibe thanks to a restricted stride and inability to take stairs two at a time, but I also had to deal with the fabric bunching up between my legs when I walked at any pace other than a slow meander, as well as feeling like I was going to trip up constantly, which – trust me – I already do enough of without a maxi skirt.
