7 obscure halal bakeries you may not have heard of

Despite the abundance of waffles, cupcakes, and churros in Singapore, sometimes there’s nothing you want more than just some hearty, homemade bread and pastries.

The often-overlooked halal micro-bakeries on this list collectively churn out sourdoughs, ciabattas, baguettes and even granola that are quietly developing an army of loyalists.

While halal bakery chains like Prima Deli and Swee Heng are easily accessible wherever you are, it’s time we show some “loaf” to these hidden gems too, even if it means waking up extra early to get your daily bread.

At this micro-bakery in the mecca of halal eateries of East Village, loaves are the real stars: sourdoughs, croissants, scones, and cinnamon rolls are sold straight out of the oven.

They’ve recently introduced freshly baked granola in some very pleasing permutations—Pandan Gula Melaka, Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter and Vanilla Bean Coconut, just to name a few—that are sure to please healthy snackers.

2. Bread Werks

Traditional baked goods seemingly from our childhood days form Bread Werks’ attempt to add nostalgia to its offerings.

Colourful, buttercream sliced cakes reminiscent of the 1990s sit alongside a variety of buns, Swiss rolls, cookies and pastries such as tarts and puffs in this River Valley shop.

I don’t know about you, but restoring the flavours of your childhood delicacies here sounds like the perfect way to spend an idle afternoon.

The baked goods at Baker’s Oven Pasttisieries’ three bakeshop branches—they’re all in SPC petrol stations—are simple: buttery croissants, egg tarts, and classic specialties, from good old American apple pie to the very Singaporean curry puff.

Cookies and cheesecakes, too. You might walk away saying Baker’s Oven is nothing special.

But sometimes simple is good, and you’ll find these great comfort-food finds here that are great for snacks on the go.

4. Guru Nice Bakery

Go for the artisanal bread like multi-grain bun and baguette, leave with their popular jar cakes.

Cake flavours such as durian, tiramisu and chocolate taste so much better when eaten on the go than served on a plate in a fancy cafe.

The bakery, which once started out as a small stall in a hawker centre, now calls sleepy Sims Drive home, where its decade’s worth of experience shines in its humble but varied offerings.

5. Indian Muslim Bakery & Confectionery

The classic karipap (Indian curry puff) is reason enough to frequent this over-70-years-old Onan Road bakery (that’s a lot of karipaps).

Need another reason? Its Indian curry bun.

It’s so popular, most teh tarek stalls across the island get their supply here. And if you’re on a hunt for something rare, a slice of cake ‘bhai'—an Indian-style raisin filled butter cake—should go down well with a glass of teh tarik.

Mini French loaves, spongecakes, mini cheese tarts, and other assorted pastries abound, but also not to be missed are the variety of sweet and savoury buns available.

Pizza bread, cheese buns, hotdog buns, butter sugar buns, and otah buns are just a few of the familiar go-to snacks baked daily at the various outlets.

7. Pita Bakery

A Middle Eastern boutique bakery hidden in a shophouse unit along Bali Lane, Pita Bakery knows what they’re doing when it comes to making the best pita.

White or wholemeal pita is topped with a several different toppings—go for the garlic—and then baked fresh daily.

I admire bakeries that focus on one particular item; that’s how you know they’re experts at it. With hundreds of pita coming out of its oven everyday, there’s no questioning this bakery’s specialty.
