It happened slowly, it happened steadily, but as the months went by, K Box disappeared and a cheerful, brightly lit replacement - fronted by a large Cai Shen Mao (lucky cat) wielding a microphone - took over.

Surprise! Ganso Manekineko, Japan’s leading karaoke chain bought over KBox shares and is set to be the go-to karaoke spot for everyone, with a new flagship outlet that opened 26 Aug 2016 at Orchard Cineleisure.

Here are seven reasons they’re more than ready to make waves in the karaoke scene.

Blankets, charging points, free flow drinks and snacks provided

You’ll find yourself to be well-equipped for a marathon singing session in the comfortable colour-coded rooms. Too cold? The front desk will readily lend you a warm, fluffy blanket. Need some juice for your electronics? There are plenty of power outlets throughout the hallways and rooms. Of course, singers need to stay hydrated and well-fed, which is why you’ll find drinks, snacks and ice cream stations at strategic corners. Prices start at $15 per person for a three-hour singing session.

A delectable spread of international cuisine every night

Greeting visitors is a huge spread of Japanese, local and international offerings at the outlet’s entrance. You have everything from sushi to satay, seafood and everything in between. Local delights include laksa, pork knuckle, and rendang.

Prices start from $32 per person for free flow drinks, a three-hour singing session and access to the all-you-can-eat buffet. Not getting the buffet? Order from the ala carte menu - you have gyoza, dons, noodles, local delights and of course a bevy of fried foods.

Amazing VIP rooms for the best parties

There are five of these special rooms in the building, each large enough to hold up to 40 people - 50 if you don’t mind the squeeze - it’s good for birthday parties and company events.

Each room has tidy little corners for chit-chat sessions, a pool table and of course plenty of television screens for a rowdy karaoke party. To get the room, all you’ll need is to spend a minimum of $1,000 and you’ll have access to the space. With 30 to 40 people at a party, it won’t be difficult to hit that amount! You can purchase liquor from the in-house bar too!

It’s a family-friendly karaoke spot

No need to cramp into a tiny, smoky karaoke room, Ganso Manekineko is bright, cheery and oh-so-colourful. With a cute cat for a mascot it’s clear that they’re looking to appeal to families too!

Also, unlike other karaoke spots, the opening song you walk into in every room is an original theme song with a music video of dancing cats. The Manekineko theme song is poppy, bubbly and just the thing to get you warmed up.

It’s affordable

Prices begin at $15 for three-hour singing sessions on weekdays and $18 on weekends. With free-flow drinks and snacks thrown into the mix, we think that’s a pretty great deal. What also helps is their opening special: $10 for 2 hour singing sessions till 1 Sept 2016.
