6 min train journeys to JB around the corner

Say goodbye to Causeway traffic jams and long customs queues. The Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS (Rapid Transit System) by MRT Corp is set to open in Dec 2026. It will reduce the Singapore-JB trip duration to just 6 minutes!

It will be a Light Rail Transit (LRT) shuttle link of about 4km connecting Johor Bahru to Woodlands. With an operational speed of 80km/h, it will complete the journey in an estimated time of just 6min— that’s excellent news for everyone making the trip.

The train itself will consist of just 4 carriages but the proposed system will have a peak frequency of 3.6min. This translates to a capacity to transport 10, 000 people per hour.

At launch in Dec 2026, this will be limited to 40, 000 passengers per day. This ceiling will likely be raised to cater to demand.

This way, commuters clear the complete immigration process at the departing station, saving the trouble of also doing so upon arrival.

As of June 2024, 350,000 travellers and 100,000 vehicles use the Causeway daily. The Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS project will increase the convenience and efficiency of travelling between the 2 countries, and simultaneously ease traffic at the checkpoints. For those who have braved these crowds for their day trips, it is indeed worth celebrating.

To Singaporeans who love to haunt Johor Bahru for affordability (the current exchange rate is S$1 = RM0.30), it is exciting news.

The Malaysian and Singapore governments are taking another step to bond the countries and their citizens. It took a few decades and many 1h+ car (or bus) rides, but we’re almost there.
