50 free bowls of 88 Katong Laksa up for seniors’ grabs for just 2 hours on 23 Feb
I’m usually a grouch but coming across acts of genuine kindness and unsung compassion on social media never fails to make my day.
While I was doing a daily scroll-through of the Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 Facebook group, I chanced upon one such post that made me smile. 88 Katong Laksa will be giving out 50 free bowls of laksa to senior citizens on 23 Feb 2024, from 12pm to 2pm.
According to the Facebook post, these 50 bowls of laksa were kindly donated by a customer who has chosen to remain anonymous.
Do note that the distribution of these bowls will be on a first-come-first-served basis, so it’s best to head down to the stall at Circuit Road Hawker Centre early.
88 Katong Laksa is no stranger to paying it forward. According to stall-owner Charlie Soh’s Facebook updates, these giveaways seem to be regular occurrences.
The most memorable one thus far was in Nov 2022, when the stall received a generous order of 100 bowls of laksa in celebration of Mr Soh’s birthday. They chose to pay the anonymous donor’s kindness forward by inviting senior citizens to their stall to feast on the laksa.
You might’ve also heard about 88 Katong Laksa’s touching backstory that has made its rounds in the media.
The stall was first spotlighted in a Mar 2022 Hawkers United Facebook post which shed light on Mr Soh’s battle with Stage 4 cancer, something he is still coping with.
The same post revealed that his motivation for setting up the stall was so that his wife would be able to support herself financially should he pass on.
Besides its delicious laksa, 88 Katong Laksa also sells chicken curry and fishball noodles, making it a viable lunch or dinner option for anyone. Do head down to the stall to support Mr and Mrs Soh!
