What I tried at i12 Katong
Authentic Hong Kong delights at Xi Tang
f you’re craving hearty Hong Kong fare or have a sweet tooth, why not swing by the new kid on the block, Xi Tang? In addition to boasting a chef who hails from Hong Kong, this casual eatery is also budget-friendly.
To reward myself after a long week, I ordered the priciest main on the menu, the Braised Beef Brisket Noodles (S$12)— the rest of the dishes are priced at S$8.50 or less.
Chunky pieces of beef brisket crowned the mound of la mian, which were doused in a shallow pool of rich, brown broth. The soup was robust and beefy, yet light enough to slurp on without feeling jelak.
The noodles had an addictive, chewy texture while the well-braised beef brisket disintegrated in my mouth effortlessly.
The Peach Gum Fungus Longan Tonic Soup (S$8) was brimming with massive cubes of peach gum, red dates, white fungus and dried longan. As it was served warm, each spoonful felt comforting, especially with the heavy rain pouring down outside. And the best part? It wasn’t that sweet.
My colleague, Rachel, and I were amused when the restaurant owner arrived with the Red Bean Mochi (S$7 for 3 pieces) and said “The ‘rats’ are ready!” Indeed, they were shaped to mimic rodents. The mochi was dusted with fine coconut bits with tiny melon seeds cleverly used to form the ears.
Though I would have loved for the texture of the mochi to be slightly chewier, the fragrant bits of desiccated coconut and the delicious red bean filling made up for it.
The Mango Pomelo Sago with Mango Ice Cream (S$6.50) was a refreshing tropical treat. There were bits of pomelo, sago, and bigger sago-like pearl jellies that gave a multitude of textures (fun mini pops included). The fresh mango chunks were aromatic while the mango ice cream gave a creamy, sweet finish.
Unique coffee with award-winning beans at Greybox Coffee
Are you a coffee connoisseur? Then allow China’s Greybox Coffee, known for its award-winning beans, to give a run for your money.
Let the iced Coconut Coffee (S$12) whisk you away to a pristine beach on a tropical island, served in a young coconut shell. This light concoction is a thirst-quenching mix of coconut water and cold brew coffee; perfect for those who dislike strong coffee.
Another intriguing option is the iced Planet Latte (S$7.50). Witness an ice orb that’s made from cold brew coffee get doused in milk, before espresso is poured over. As the trio mingles, it offers an ever-evolving flavour experience for your taste buds.
If you’re hankering for food, The American Beef Pie (S$9.60) comes with either a salad or granola yoghurt. The flaky, sesame-crusted puff pastry encapsulates a scrumptious, lightly-spiced beef filling with cubes of potato and capsicum.
For a more substantial lunch, grab the Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Ciabatta with Salad and Granola Yoghurt (S$16.50). The crispy and fluffy ciabatta is stuffed with a thiccc layer of smoked salmon and luscious cream cheese— simply irresistible!
Maple-centric treats at Tim Hortons
Tim Hortons is a heritage Canadian brand that was established way back in 1964. Since its entry into Singapore in Nov 2023, we finally get the chance to savour their coffee and bakes.
I sank my teeth into the Maple Glaze Donut (S$3.50) and was greeted by a satisfyingly sweet maple frosting, accented with subtle toffee-like hints. Shortly after, the fluffy texture of the donut took centre stage.
Truth be told, the Maple Glazed Chicken Ham & Cheese (S$9.90) probably had one of the crispiest grilled breads I’ve ever tried. The ham and cheese were elevated by the dollop of mustard mayo, delivering a tangy burst of flavour, while the cherry tomatoes were refreshing.
The warm Maple Cinnamon Latte (S$7) tasted very Christmassy with the distinctive woody notes of cinnamon and the caramel-infused nuances of maple.
For an ice-cold indulgence, the Maple French Vanilla Iced Capp (S$7.50) is a rich and creamy blend made from Tim Hortons coffee, infused with maple syrup and the smoothness of French vanilla.
Casual dining at So Good Char Chan Tang
Craving for that polo bun or roast meat platter that you enjoyed on your last Hong Kong vacation? Then let So Good Char Chan Tang cover you from breakfast to dinner, or anytime in-between.
If you’re obsessed with cheese like me, go for the Baked Cheese Spaghetti Bolognese (S$8.90). A delicious chicken bolognese pasta is given the lush gratin treatment, arriving at your table piping-hot and covered with a luscious, golden-brown layer of cheese.
The French Toast (S$3.60) is a decadent and sweet treat to perk you up. It consists of 2 slabs of grilled eggy bread that’s topped with a small slab of butter, then finished off with maple syrup. Share this lip-smacking dish with a friend or have it all to yourself!
For a perfect end to your meal, wash it all down with an invigorating glass of Iced Lemon Tea (S$2.80) or Iced Red Bean (S$3.60).
Delightful cakes & bakes at Edith Patisserie
Visit Edith Patisserie for a delicious slice of their handcrafted cakes and bakes that’s perfect for an afternoon tea or satisfying dessert.
If you’re looking for variety, why not save some dollars (S$3.10 to be exact) and get the Assorted Mini Treats (S$14.20)? Pick and choose your desired combination and ours was: Mango Raspberry Blondie, Matcha Blondie, Salted Speculoos Blondie, Hazelnut Brownie and a Mini Lemon Loaf.
Enjoy the floral notes of lavender paired with the citrusy hints of earl grey in the Earl Grey Lavender Slice (S$8.60).
If you’d like to embrace the upcoming festive holidays, get the exclusive Christmas special, the refreshing Raspberry Mango Log Cake Slice (S$8.60). It features a lovely trinity of mango curd, white chocolate chantilly and raspberries.
