According to Skytrax, regional airports are basically airports that serve mainly domestic and short-haul international flights of up to 6 hours. 1. Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport
You might not know this but Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport is the first airport on the planet to earn the new but coveted 5-Star Regional Airport title back in February 2017. This super clean and neat airport may be small but it packs a punch, earning stellar ratings on departures, arrivals, transfers, security, WiFi and internet, ease of navigating around the airport, selection of food and drinks at the airport, the types of shopping you can do at the airport and more.
Not only has Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport done well in the above-mentioned areas, their website even has an easily accessible page that's specially dedicated for inbound Muslim visitors where one can find information such as pray room locations, alcohol-free and pork-free food options in the airport and more. I'm not a Muslim, but I find that a really nice touch since I do have Muslim friends who are crazy about Japan.
2. Haikou Meilan Airport
Following Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport's win, Haikou Meilan Airport, in April 2017, was awarded the 5-Star Regional Airport title. In case its name isn't one that rings bells automatically, this regional airport is nestled on Hainan Island, China.
While not the cleanest, at least in comparison to Nagoya Chubu Centrair Airport, Haikou Meilan Airport has raked in an almost perfect score in areas pertaining to departures, arrivals, transfers, security, shopping, ease of finding one's way in the airport, and the assortment of food and drinks available in the airport.
