Our small front porch decorating ideas will help you make the most of every square inch to create a welcoming space. The front porch is often the first place to greet guests or to hang out with neighbors on a balmy night. But when you have a small area, you need to be creative to squeeze in space for relaxing. Follow these tips from HGTV designer Breegan Janes.

Choose Porch Furniture Wisely

Even with a small front porch, you can probably offer a place to sit—a cozy bench, loveseat, or a couple of chairs for hanging out. You don't want to fill every square inch with furnishings, so look for smaller-scale options.

"Bistro sets are a great way to lean into the intimate setting of a small space; they create such a cozy, café-like feel for your guests," says Janes, who works with TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Find Easy-to-Move Porch Furniture

Small front porch furniture should be portable, foldable, and serve multiple purposes.

"Poufs add some texture to a space and are easy to bring in and out if you need extra seating," Janes says. "Functional furniture like a folding serving cart is easy to bring in and out when you have guests."

Consider Light and Airy Materials

Using open-weave rattan or other airy materials can make outdoor furniture feel a lot less substantial (and that's a good thing). "Woven furniture creates a really open, airy setting without feeling cluttered," Janes explains.

Go Bold With Front Porch Accessories

Accessories are essential for enhancing a small front porch. "My biggest piece of advice is to not let a small space hold you back," Janes says. "You can always let your personality shine."

You may think that you need to keep it simple when decorating a small front porch but don't be afraid to add personality with accessories.

"When it comes to decorating any outdoor space, my motto has been all about maximalism. You can accessorize your furniture with bold, eye-catching accent pieces," Janes adds.

Think Vertically

Planters can take up precious floor space on your porch. Get creative to preserve room for porch seating and other furnishings.

"Both hanging planters and wall planters are the perfect way to save space while adding some greenery to your porch," Janes says.

Decorate With the Seasons

You don't have to stick with the same decor from spring to fall. Change out throws, planters, and other decor from month to month or each season.

In the spring, go with a lighter throw and a planter of tulips. For fall, a stylish stack of pumpkins and cozy candles work great.

Bring the Inside Out

When decorating a small front porch, don't be afraid to bring elements of indoor decor outdoors. "Try adding cozy accent pieces like string lights, throw pillows, or small rugs to make your space inviting," Janes says.

Create Symmetry

Small front porches can appear larger with a bit of symmetry. Try decorating your space with matching chairs and cushions on either side of the porch. Add a pair of plants for a symmetrical look that catches the eye.

Develop Zones With a Purpose

You can divide your small porch into smaller zones, each with a purpose—relaxing, conversing, eating, etc. Reserve the front door area for people to get in and out of the house. Use one corner for a cozy nook and another for an eating space (perhaps with a small table).

Opt for Smaller Plants

Don't clutter your small front porch with shrubs or overgrown plants. Purchase dwarf or midsize outdoor plants for a scaled-down look. They add beauty but won't look overwhelming.

Add Color to the Space

The right color combinations can make your front porch feel bigger. Try adding pastel colors for a light and airy feel. Balance dark and light shades for a cozy atmosphere.

Consider Adding Pavers

If room allows, permanent pavers can truly transform an outdoor space. They can help lead a path to the front porch steps or provide a custom design for a personalized touch.

Construct a Utility Area

For added function, add a (decorative) outdoor sink to help your family and guests wash up before entering the house. This is especially helpful for gardening fans and kids—plus pets.

Add buckets to hold gardening tools or other outside items. They'll be organized and can be easily moved around.

Install a Screen

Adding a screen to your front porch makes the space perfect for entertaining all year. A screen can keep bugs and pests out and help avoid tons of moisture from entering your area.

Decorate With Lattice

For a varied look, add lattice to the frame of your front porch. The latticework creates a decorative, cozy space and adds personality to your outdoor oasis.

Let Nature Inspire

Take advantage of the beautiful landscapes and views near your home. If you have a background of mountains, perhaps adding cabin and wooden decor to your front porch will be overwhelming. Try complementing the natural landscape in your design.

Extend Your Home's Decor

By decorating your small porch to complement the interior decor of your home, you create an extension of the indoor space. Try using the same colors—in furniture and accessories—used indoors.

Use Shelves for Increased Space

Adding shelves or mantels above seating can create extra space that doesn't take away from floor space. Use shelves for displaying decorative pieces like small plants or candles. You can also make them functional by keeping necessary outdoor items organized.

Create Privacy With Bushes

Planting tall bushes outside your front porch can add privacy to your space. A few well-placed plants that grow tall can help provide an intimate area for your family.
