Taro fans can fix their cravings and embrace tradition all at once with the Crispy Skin Yam with Single Yolk Mooncake (S$62 for 4 pieces). Once your teeth sink into the Teochew-style mooncake’s light and crisp skin, you’ll be greeted by a luscious yam filling, crafted from meticulously-picked Thai yam together with creamy salted egg yolk. It’s easy to see why this would be their signature.
Made fresh to order, the Mini Walnut Lotus with Yolk (S$52 for 8 pieces) is a standout favourite among both the young and old. This pastry masterpiece mingles velvety lotus paste and baked salted egg yolk into a crispy, buttery cookie crust, before being stuffed with rich, earthy walnuts. You’ll be struggling to stop at just one piece.
For an innovative twist on a classic, give the Crispy Skin Yam with Ginkgo Nuts Mooncake (S$62 for 4) a try. The signature silky-smooth yam paste is combined with onion oil for an extra fragrant touch, complemented by buttery and nutty ginkgo nuts.
For a multitude of textures and tastes, you mustn’t miss out on the Traditional Mixed Nuts & Seeds Mooncake (S$62 for 4 pieces). 10. Wu You Eating Place
With over 18 flavours to choose from with 3 different types of mooncake skins, you will be spoilt for choice at Wu You Eating Place. Their speciality is the Crispy (Su Pi) Skin Mooncake (S$6.80). Unlike the typical Teochew mooncake, this has less of a crunch but more buttery flavours.
I would say go for the one with the single salted egg yolk. With a creamy lotus paste that is not dry, the salted egg yolk gives a subtle savoury flavour accentuating the sweetness of the lotus paste.
They also do have my favourite snowskin mooncakes with an innovative twist – the Dual Snowskin Orange + Strawberry with Matcha (S$7.50). Cue the typical Asian parent praise for food: this is not too sweet. While indeed this has a more subtle flavour for orange and strawberry, I liked how the matcha flavours were not too in your face, which makes this more suitable for the larger crowd.

11. Two Bake Boys
Is it a cake? Is it a mooncake? NO! It’s a Moon Crepe! Two Bake Boy’s Moon Crepe Cake Gift Box (S$89) comes in a lantern-like box with 4 Moon Crepes – 2 Thai Tea and 2 Mango flavoured ones.
These arrive just in time, as I was beginning to think that the mooncake industry had reached its peak with nothing new to offer. These are the perfect innovative mooncakes if you think those traditional mooncakes are too dry and too boring. Inside these Moon Crepes are layered crepes with thin layers of cream making these mooncakes moist and fluffy on the inside.

12. Four Seasons Durian
No Mid-Autumn Festival is complete without some durian mooncakes so one cannot sleep on Four Seasons Durian and their Snowskin Mao Shan Wang Mooncakes (S$143). What’s more, is they are currently offering a 1-for-1 promotion now where you can get 2 boxes of these mooncakes for the price of 1. Sweet!
Packaged simply in a metal tin box lie 4 beautiful and delicate pale white mooncakes. The mooncakes are encased in a soft and chewy snowskin, creating a sharp contrast in textures. The skin is gently sweet and slightly elastic, resulting in a lovely texture.
When you bite into the mooncake, the rich and creamy durian filling takes centre stage. The durian’s characteristic, strong aroma immediately envelops the senses, followed by a rich, custard-like flavour that is both sweet and savoury. The creamy smoothness of the durian filling blends harmoniously with the snow skin, resulting in a delectable, smooth consistency.
If you are not a fan of the strong pungent aroma of Mao Shan Wang, then you have to try the pinkish snowskin mooncake – the D24 Mooncake (S$91 for box of 4). While it does not have as strong of a durian flavour, it still contains the essence of the creamy flesh.
I could go on and on about these mooncakes but it still will not do it justice. All I would say is, if you are a durian lover then this is definitely for you!

14. Ralph’s Coffee
Ralph’s Coffee develops a unique and considerate Ralph Coffee Mooncake (S$118) gift box every year to commemorate the Mid-Autumn Festival in a new way. This year’s edition is elegantly designed, inspired by a classic steam locomotive, and has superb craftsmanship and materials.
The train design depicts Ralph’s Coffee’s trip from New York to Asia, across various cultural environments. The gift box contains a train in the traditional green and white colours, with the delightful Ralph’s Coffee BEAR-ista greeting you warmly.
The train also functions as a great ornamental feature, reminding everyone of their holiday memories.
Inside the compartment, you’ll find 6 little mooncakes in 2 delicious flavours: coffee and chocolate raspberry (3 each), all prepared and cooked to exquisite perfection in Singapore.
The Coffee Mooncake a symbol and an icon of Ralph’s Coffee has a creamy yet earthy woody flavour almost resembling their latte. The Chocolate Raspberry Mooncake similarly has a dark woody undertone that is brightened up by the subtle sweetness of the raspberry.
On top of that, I loved how the tartness of the raspberry also prevents the chocolate from being too surfeiting.

16. Sunny Hills
Sunny Hills is known for one of the prettiest mooncakes I have ever seen. Priding themselves on using premium ingredients to create mooncakes that stand out in taste and quality, each mooncake is meticulously crafted with intricate designs.
It also ensures a harmonious blend of their unique flavours and textures. This dedication to excellence is evident in every bite, making SunnyHills mooncakes a gourmet delight.
It is also nestled in a cute cartoon-themed cardboard box for environmental purposes.
This year, Sunny Hills launches 2 kinds of mooncakes: the Pineapple Custard Mooncake (S$10.50) and the Kougyoku Apple Mooncake (S$11.30). One can also get the Moon Gazing Mid Autumn Gift Box (S$41) which contains 1 of each mooncake and its own Oolong Tea Drip Bags. The Pineapple Custard Mooncake is SunnyHills’ own interpretation of mooncake combining Taiwanese pineapple paste with a salted egg custard.
The savoury and umami salted egg custard brings out the sweetness of the pineapple paste. Special mention to the momoyama crust which is made of white bean paste egg yolk butter and milk. It also contains less sugar and fats than traditional mooncake skins, resulting in 65% fewer calories.
As for the Kougyoku Apple Mooncake, it is filled generously with Kougyoku Apple and roasted sweet potato. Made in-house, the apple and sweet potato filling is not too sweet and I enjoyed the tartness of the apple.
For a mooncake gift that will wow your friends and family, Sunny Hills is the one you should be looking out for. They are also having a 3-for-1 promotion till 9 Sep for most of their mid-autumn boxes.

17. Läderach
For this year’s Mid Autumn Festival, Läderach marries the best of Swiss craftsmanship and Asian traditions in their mooncake gift box collection. Unlike many other mooncake brands, which I feel that you are paying more for the gift box than the mooncake itself, Läderach is straight to the point. Simple yet classy, patterned wooden box, hiding 2 straight-to-the-point mooncakes.
Their Autumn Bliss Gift Box (S$78.40) holds their signature FrischSchoggi and two traditional baked mooncakes – Double yolk Mooncake and the Peach Oolong and Melon Seeds Mooncake.
The Double Yolk and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste Traditional Baked Mooncake is a delightful treat that balances indulgence with health-consciousness. This mooncake features a golden, flaky crust encasing a smooth, low-sugar white lotus paste, making it a perfect choice for those watching their sugar intake.
The highlight of this mooncake is the presence of two salted egg yolks, which provide a rich, savoury contrast to the mildly sweet paste. The combination of the creamy yolks and the delicate lotus paste creates a harmonious blend of flavours that is both satisfying and luxurious, appealing to traditional mooncake enthusiasts.
On the other hand, the Peach Oolong and Melon Seeds White Lotus Paste Traditional Baked Mooncake offers a unique and aromatic twist on the classic mooncake. This mooncake also has a golden, flaky crust that gives way to a fragrant white lotus paste infused with the subtle, floral notes of peach oolong tea.
The harmonious blend of the light, fruity aroma of peach oolong and the nutty crunch of melon seeds elevate the traditional mooncake to a new level of sophistication, perfect for those seeking a modern twist on a classic treat.

18. Zhen Wei
Zhen Wei Mooncakes a sister brand of the popular 1A Crispy Puffs offers a Teochew variety of delightful mooncakes, each providing a unique taste experience. This sister branding is also prominent in the very familiar layered crust of their mooncakes. Their innovative box design this year can also be reused as a tissue box cover.
For people who enjoy the more simplistic flavours then you can consider the Pure Yam Mooncake (S$50.15 for 4). It is smooth and creamy with a natural sweetness, this mooncake highlights the classic flavour of yam. Their yam paste is very smooth and fresh, they are handmade from the stretch.
Their Single Yolk Yam Mooncake (S$51.17 for 4) is the Teochew rendition of the traditional baked mooncake. It combines the sweetness of yam with the savoury richness of salted egg yolk, creating a perfect balance.
As a salted egg lover, however, I would go for the Double Yolk Yam Mooncake (S$60.35 for 4). With 2 salted egg yolks, it has a more intense savoury experience, ideal for those who prefer robust flavours.
They also serve the Sesame Yam Mooncake (S$56.10 for 4) and the Pumpkin Yam Mooncake (S$56.10 for 4).

19. Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes
For a vegan, halal and diabetic-friendly mooncake, you can consider Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes. This year, Delcie’s is back with its diet-friendly mooncakes.
This year’s specials feature the White Lotus & Black Sesame (S$65 for 2), Pandan & Salted Mung Beans (S$65 for 2) and Mixed Nuts (S$108 for 4). Although it is vegan and does not contain any cane sugar, it still retains the essence of traditional mooncakes.
Although I felt that the Mixed Nuts mooncake was a tad bit on the dryer side, I loved how packed the mooncake was and the burst of nuttiness. If you are allergic to nuts then I would recommend the White Lotus and Black Sesame which has a smooth lotus paste with a nutty black sesame centre.

20. Hung Huat Cakes and Pastries
Hung Huat Cakes and Pastries, originally known as Sim’s Place bakery, began with the first generation of hawkers in Singapore.
Before moving to Sim’s Place Hawker Centre in 1976, Mr. and Mrs. Sim sold Mian Jian Kueh (pancakes) from a pushcart along the streets of Geylang Lorong 17 to 19. As their children took over, they expanded into making more pastries. Now, in its third generation, the business continues to use traditional in-house recipes and the freshest ingredients to create its special Teochew mooncakes.
Their signature is Teochew Crispy Yam Mooncake with yolk (S$14). Fans are recommended to heat up the mooncakes just a little. This accentuates the crisps of its crust paired with the subtle sweetness of fresh homemade yam paste. My go-to would be the one with salted egg which gives it a savoury yet umami kick.
If Teochew mooncakes aren’t your thing then they also offer Traditional Baked Skin Mooncake (from S$8) with Lotus paste or my go-to, the double yolk version.
My initial impression of Teochew mooncake was not so positive due to past experiences. The skin, despite being crispy, was dry and the yam on the inside aggravated this dryness.
However, I must say that Hung Huat Bakery has completely changed my impression of it. The yam on the inside was freshly-made giving it that creaminess I was looking for. This was then paired with the thin yet crispy crust. First-timers to Teochew mooncake should give Hung Huat Bakery a shot!
