Nonbinary is a descriptor used by individuals whose gender identity lies outside the binary gender categories of man and woman. Often, but not always, these individuals will use “they/them” pronouns. But because gender identity falls along a spectrum, they may use “he/him” or “she/her” pronouns as well. It’s also important to remember gender identity and sexual orientation are different things; a nonbinary person may be gay, lesbian, bisexual or pansexual. Likewise, they may be transgender or they may not.

Gender identity may also change over time based on the individual. Singer Demi Lovato came out as non-binary in 2021, but in 2022 went back to using “she/her” pronouns in addition to “they/them” pronouns after “feeling more feminine.” Lovato recently said that educating others about pronouns was “exhausting” but “for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

Here are other notable celebrities who identify as nonbinary or gender-fluid.
