13 food spots in Jem to feast on the best of the West

Jurong East is one of the best areas for shopping and dining in Singapore, thanks to the plethora of malls within its vicinity. Ask any Westie, and they’ll tell you that Jem is the best of them all. With 6 whole levels of retail space, this classy heartland mall is home to a wide array of restaurants that serve everything from Asian to Western cuisine and more.

Here are 13 food spots to check out in Jem to feast on the best of the West.

1. Pocha! (#03-05/06)

If you love Korean food as much as I do, you absolutely must check out Pocha! Inspired by its namesake pojangmacha tents that line the buzzin’ streets of Seoul, this casual eatery serves up a menu of delectable Korean street eats. With K-bops flowing from the speakers and a vibrant interior adorned with neon signages, its ambience will transport you right to Korea.

Pocha’s menu is crazy extensive, and trust me: you’ll be tempted to try just about everything on it. So, pro tip: bring along as many friends as you can and make it a zi char-style affair.

Have you ever salivated while watching the characters on your favourite K-drama slurp on a bowl of ramyeon? Guess what: Pocha! has a whole range of K-Movie Eats, which includes the likes of Creamy Shin Ramyeon (S$13.90) as seen in What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim (2018), Jjajangmyeon (S$13.90) from Wonderful World (2024) and Jjapaguri (S$10.90) from the Academy Award-winning Parasite (2019).

That aside, the menu also includes perennial favourites such as Sindang-dong Tteokbokki (S$11.90), Budae Jjigae (S$15.90), Bibimbab (S$8.90), Hangari Bokkeumbab (S$11.90) and many more.

2. Twyst (#B1-K14)

High quality yet wallet-friendly pasta? Say no more. Twyst is a Halal-certified pasta bar that not only offers exactly that but also allows you to build your own pasta. Believe it or not, there are more than 210 possible customisations!

While I can’t explain the math behind that, I can certainly walk through the menu for you. You’ll start off with your choice of pasta between Spaghetti and Penne, which you will pair with any of their 6 sauces: Aglio Olio (S$8.50), Tomato Pomodoro (S$9.50), Laksa Olio (S$10.50), Gochujang (S$10.50), Creamy Alfredo (S$10.50) and Miso Butter (S$10.50).

Every pasta purchase entitles you to 1 protein and 1 topping. Protein options include Poached Chicken, Beef Pepperoni, Sauteed Prawns, Smoked Duck and Assorted Seafood (+S$2). Then, go ham with toppings such as Mushroom, Sous Vide Egg, Baby Spinach and Truffle Oil, with each additional topping costing an extra S$1.20.

My order of Creamy Alfredo Penne with Smoked Duck and Mushrooms was utterly satisfying, with a generous portion of al dente pasta coated in garlicky alfredo sauce, complemented by earthy mushrooms and mouth-watering smoked duck slices. My dining partner’s Laksa Olio Penne with Poached Chicken and Sous Vide Egg was equally delicious, with a distinct laksa flavour and an addictive spice.

It’s never a bad day for pizza — one of Singaporeans’ favourite foods, without a doubt. Satisfy those delicious doughy cravings at Pizzakaya, a Japanese-style pizzeria that specialises in Western-Japanese fusion dishes like pastas and, of course, pizzas.

As someone who loves pizza as much as the next person, I have to say that you’re missing out if you’ve never dined here before.

Pizzakaya’s hand-stretched, oven-fired pizzas are fluffy and chewy, with irresistibly crackly, golden-brown edges. These creations come in a variety of flavours, from classic Margherita (S$12.80) and Hawaiian (S$17.80) to more unique options like Beef Bulgogi (S$19.80), the seafood tom yum-inspired Milky Bangkok (S$19.80) and the signature Quattro Cheese (S$17.80), topped with 4 cheeses and drizzled with maple syrup.

My personal favourite is the adorably-named Duck is Carrying the Leek (S$17.80), a pie slathered with creamy white sauce, topped with savoury smoked duck slices, stretchy mozzarella cheese and earthy rocket leaves.

When it comes to Taiwanese fare in Singapore, Eat 3 Bowls reigns supreme for its authentic take on the cuisine. And yes, you read that right — this crowd-favourite eatery has an outlet in Jem. If you’ve ever found yourself missing Taiwan, go forth and indulge!

Eat 3 Bowls’s Braised Pork Rice (S$6.50) is my go-to whenever the craving hits. With melt-in-your-mouth tender chunks of perfectly braised pork atop a bed of fluffy pearl rice, it tastes almost identical to the versions I’ve had in Taiwan.

Another must-eat is the Shredded Chicken Rice (S$6.50), which sounds simple but is packed with flavour. The rice is topped with succulent chicken shreds and drizzled plentifully with a fragrant, savoury scallion oil-infused sauce. Complete with a sprinkle of umami shallots and fresh coriander, it’ll have you wishing for seconds soon enough.

Loved by tourists and locals alike, Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice found its way from Bangkok’s Pratunam district to Singapore’s shores. Westies who want a taste of their Michelin-approved Thai-style Hainanese chicken rice can get just that at their Jem outlet.

Like the Hainanese chicken rice we know and love, their signature Khao Man Gai (Thai for chicken rice) comes in both steamed and roasted variations. Whichever you pick, expect some teeth-sinking tender meat that is moist and seasoned to a tee. It pairs wonderfully with the fragrant rice and Go-Ang’s secret homemade chilli sauce.

The Single Portion Chicken Rice and Single Portion Chicken Thigh Rice are priced at S$5.50 and S$6.50 respectively. If you’re dining with a larger group, you can opt for the Half Chicken (S$18) or Whole Chicken (S$34), along with other zi char-style dishes such as the Thai-style Curry Fish Head (S$29.90), Sambal Kang Kong (S$7.90) and Tofu Cube with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce (S$8.90).
