On New Year’s Day (1 January 2024), the Goods & Services Tax (GST) in Singapore will be raised to 9 per cent. This is the second of a two-tiered raise; the first happened on 1 January 2023, bumping the GST from 7 to 8 per cent.
The GST hike is necessary to support Singapore’s increasing healthcare expenditure due to our ageing population. It is also needed to provide working parents with better childcare support and to invest more in security to mitigate threats like terrorism and cyber attacks.
While some companies like Giant, FairPrice, Sheng Siong and IKEA will be absorbing the GST hike to keep their products affordable, most of us will still feel the impacts of the GST hike come next year. To help Singaporeans cope better with the GST hike, the government has prepared Assurance Package payouts and GST vouchers.
If you’re planning to upgrade the tech or electronic products in your home or office, it’s best if you do it before the GST increases next year. However, this is not a cue to splurge mindlessly but to only purchase what you need.
