Every year, Jews around the world celebrate Passover, a holiday that commemorates the biblical Exodus from Egypt. On the first two nights of Passover, there's a seder, a ritual meal that re-tells the Exodus of the Israelites with a reading from a Haggadah, which serves as a guide for the seder.
As Rabbi Jill Jacobs writes in My Jewish Learning, "The Passover Haggadah demands that each person see him or herself as having personally come forth out of Egypt. Accordingly, the seder is one of the most sensory-heavy rituals of the Jewish year. During the seder, we don’t just tell the story of the Exodus, we see, smell, feel, and taste liberation."
Key to the Passover seder is a seder plate, which typically sits at the center of the table, holding six food items that symbolize parts of the Passover story. My favorite part of my family's Passover seder every year is the haroset, one of the parts of the Seder plate. Symbolizing mortar, what the Israelite slaves used to build in Egypt, haroset is typically made of fruits, wine, and nuts. That's just one of the six items on the seder plate—the others are parsley, horseradish, another bitter herb (like romaine lettuce), shank bone, and an egg.
In addition, some families add an orange, recognizing queer Jews and others marginalized in the Jewish community. The orange seder plate ritual started with Professor Susana Heschel, a feminist Jewish scholar.
Seder plates make a great Jewish wedding gift, or a housewarming gift. While some families have been using the same one for generations, others find themselves sprucing up their Passover with a brand-new seder plate. Passover 2024 begins the evening of April 22, so you have plenty of time to get shopping. Here are some of our favorite seder plates:
