10 best places to get mee goreng in Singapore, mamak style

A popular street food in Singapore and Malaysia, mee goreng is a stir-fried dish made with fried egg noodles in a savoury sauce along with slices of veggies, and often with meat chunks thrown in. As you must already know, mee goreng mamak is the Indian Muslim style of cooking mee goreng. Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or post-partying supper, this is a dish you simply cannot dislike.

When I first decided to write this mee goreng listicle, I thought I had a pretty good idea of who would end up at which rank. However, once I started with my tastings, I found that some versions I had previously enjoyed immensely weren’t really that great while others that had seemed ordinary before had elevated their game. It seems inconsistency is the name of the mee goreng game in Singapore.

So, take this list more as a ‘group of the 10 best mee goreng vendors’ rather than one in ranked sequence.

1. Al Falah Barakah

A basic plate of mee goreng costs S$5.30 and by basic, I mean no meat. Add mutton and the price shoots up to S$7.50. Their version is sort of the Goldilocks of mee goreng. It’s oily but not too oily, spicy but not too spicy, and dry but not too dry. What I do like is that some of the noodles are cooked to the point of hard crispiness which just feels great to bite into.

2. MA Deen Biasa

MA Deen Biasa is known most widely for its Sup Tulang but they whip up a mean mee goreng (from S$6), too. On the days when everything is done perfectly, you can rest assured you will get wonderfully moist chunks of mutton and noodles that are perfectly balanced between wet and dry.

3. Thawfeek Cuisine

I find the mee goreng (from S$6) from Thawfeek Cuisine to be one of the most consistently good ones so it is easy to recommend them. It seems a lot of people agree with me, which is why it’s practically impossible to find a table here during meal times. If you want to hone in on one thing, I’d say that it’s the homemade sauce that makes this dish so popular.

4. Al Jasra

People with normal tongues beware! Al Jasra does one of the best mee goreng ever but you’ll need to have a really high spice threshold to enjoy it. I don’t know why I torture myself with the hissing and panting and water drinking every few weeks when I buy from them… but it’s probably because everything else in the dish is done so well. I suppose I could ask them for a less spicy version but who am I to break with tradition, huh?

5. Shah Alam Restaurant

Shah Alam is one of the most popular places to end up after a night of partying at any of the quays along the Singapore River. They have served me many a plate of mee goreng (S$6) over the years, which I have enjoyed through/despite varying levels of inebriation. I was pleasantly surprised that it stands up to sober scrutiny as well and easily belongs on this list.

6. Ajimer Sharif

The humble Indian-style mee goreng that has become a Singaporean favourite probably evolved in and around Little India’s Tekka Market where Ajimer Sharif is located. Their S$4 plates of Mee Goreng served with mutton, beansprouts, peas, potato cubes and egg are well worth the price. You can also opt for a plate of Mee Goreng Seafood that will set you back just S$6. I liked the serving sizes and the flavours but would recommend that you visit at an off-peak period.

7. Hass Bawa

One of my all-time favourites and a consistent entrant on local ‘Best Mee Goreng’ lists, Hass Bawa deserves the accolades. I have been enchanted by their version of this red wonder not just for the taste but the mouthfeel as well. There is something about the way they cook their noodles that makes them soft but springy and it works perfectly with the tender bits of meat in every bite.

8. ABC Food Corner

This was the surprise entry on my list. Known more for its prata than mee goreng (from S$5.50), this all-night eatery turned out to be a hidden gem for the latter. My plate did take a bit longer to arrive compared to all the other restaurants but was worth the wait. The noodles were the drier kind that I prefer and the sauce had a kick without being an arsonist.

9. Suka Ramai Mama Power

The cute name Suka Ramai (Everyone’s Favourite) made me smile but not more so than their excellent mee goreng (from S$3.80) did. Served in a portion that was the smallest of all the contenders (but just right for me), it is a wonderful concoction of a wet-ish pondok of noodles served with 2 hardboiled egg halves. Simple and good!

10. KNS Restaurant

While it makes the top mee goreng list for many, I find KNS to be a little too much on the inconsistent side. I have loved it on certain days (this one’s a moist and spicy mix) but the experience was quite underwhelming when I got it recently delivered to my home. When done well, KNS’s Mee Goreng Vegetables (from S$6.15) contains just the right proportion of veggies and is served in a satisfyingly large portion.
