10 best local breakfast spots in JB to kickstart your day

A delicious breakfast is important for a great start to the day. With a plethora of choices in Malaysia ranging from Western to Asian and traditional Nanyang dishes, I often find myself cracking my head early in the morning. But I will always end up going for a local breakfast as my love for it is unwavering.

Happiness can be as simple as indulging in a breakfast with half-boiled eggs and toast— comforting yet satisfying. Hence, it’s important to find a perfect breakfast spot. That’s exactly why we have handpicked a list of 10 best local breakfast places in JB to help start your day right.

1. 南洋茶室 Restoran Nan Yang

Restoran Nan Yang is a great place to kick start your day. If you’re looking to see  fancy decorations, then you’re at the wrong place. Here, you’ll only find a cosy Nanyang-style kopitiam filled with locals from the neighbourhood.

It’s impossible to overlook the staple in a traditional Nanyang breakfast— Kaya Butter (RM3.60) Toast and Half Boiled Kampung Egg (RM3.60). They have a pretty diverse selection for toast with options like Peanut Planta Toast (RM3.20), a combination that I’ve never even thought of, Egg Mayo Toast (RM4.90), another classic go-to, as well as other tempting flavours.

Are these light breakfast options not what you’re looking for? Rest assured, as they also offer hearty dishes like Fried Chicken Mee Siam (RM11.90), Egg Nasi Lemak (RM7.90), and Herbal Chicken Rice Noodles (RM15.90). Pair it with some snacks, too if you’d love to; there’s a range of offerings for you to choose from.

Heng Wah Kopitiam at Taman Pelangi has always been one of the go-to places on my list. I’m especially drawn to its rave reviews online— it has been appearing on my feed for quite some time. With its vintage storefront, I expect to find some authentic Nanyang taste here.

True to what I’ve anticipated, the eatery serves an abundance of local dishes, but not limited to these. Instead of the classic fare, try the Peanut Butter with Kaya Butter Croissant (RM8.90) for a breakfast with a twist. You’ll find 1 peanut butter croissant and 1 kaya butter croissant in the dish.

The croissant’s exterior is enjoyably flaky; I could feel the pleasant buttery aroma gradually filling my mouth when I bit into it. It served as a perfect counterbalance to the sweet flavour profile of the kaya. Meanwhile, the Peanut Butter Croissant presents a nuttier taste instead of a buttery one.

The hearty Laksa Mee with Mee Hoon (RM12.90) is yet another dish to try. With just the right amount of coconut milk and the perfect thickness, the broth tastes like the classic laksa that you usually get from a roadside stall or an ancient coffee shop; but this one, you get to enjoy in an air-conditioned environment. There’s also the Dry Ban Mian with Egg (RM12.90), featuring a mild sweetness with a hint of fried shallot scent. To wash down your meal, have a cup of Kopi (RM3.60).
