"Zombieland 2" is happening in time for its 10th anniversary

The long overdue "Zombieland" sequel has a release date confirmed and it is sooner than you think.

16 May – It is time to update that zombie apocalypse survival rulebook as "Zombieland 2" is finally happening with a confirmed release date.

In an interview with Vulture, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who penned the script for the first movie, said that the long-awaited "Zombieland" sequel will hit theatres in October 2019.

"The hope is that we're shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of 2019 release; with the original cast, by the way," said Wernick.

The original cast members mentioned include Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin.

With the cast and writers already confirmed, it is unclear if director Ruben Fleischer would return for the sequel of the movie that launched his career as a sought-after filmmaker.

Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and Woody Harrelson would return as Columbus, Wichita, Little Rock, and Tallahassee respectively in "Zombieland 2".

A "Zombieland" sequel has long been talked about since its initial release but due to the cast and writer's commitments to other projects, the movie has been put on hold for almost a decade.

The closest fans got to a "Zombieland" follow-up was a failed TV series in 2013, which was ultimately cancelled after only premiering the pilot episode.

"Zombieland" was a surprise success which managed to rake in over USD 102 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing zombie movie for the following years until "World War Z" took its spot in 2013.
