If you’ve always wanted to experience being a part of the “Resident Evil” or “The Walking Dead” universes without being in an actual zombie apocalypse, here’s the chance you’ve been waiting for.

Universal Studios Singapore’s popular scare festival, Halloween Horror Nights, will be returning from 29 September to 29 October this year, and features a zombie laser tag experience among its new lineup of shows, scare zones and haunted houses.

According to a press release on Thursday (10 August), this year’s event is themed after a slightly different category of seven deadly sins, typically recognised as lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride. Instead, the sins that will be represented have been modified for “the modern day life” — cruelty, deception, malice, manipulation, narcissism, perversion and obsession.

This year’s theme is among the most disturbing ones, drawing upon seven new incarnations of deadly sins to reflect the zeitgeist of today’s society where people are preoccupied with individualism, beauty and power,” said Jason Horkin, the senior vice-president of attractions at Resorts World Sentosa. The new “sins” will be embodied in seven iconic characters called the “Sinisters”.

Visitors can expect five haunted houses, two scare zones and two “killer” shows at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights, which has also been dubbed by the organiser as its “most technologically-advanced” edition yet.

The zombie laser tag experience, for example, utilises brainwave technology and requires participants to wear headbands that sense “concentration levels” in order to help them unlock clues during their quest.

Participants will be required to upgrade their tickets at an additional $38 each for this section, and will be playing in teams of four while they fend off and “kill” deranged zombies using their laser tag gear.

Visitors can also expect new storylines such as “Death Mall”, a story set in a fictitious haunted mall, and “Inside the Mind”, a story revolving around insight into the psyche of a force of evil.

This year’s shows are entitled “Laboratorium” and “Slice of Life Tour” respectively. The former tells the story of human experiments that have gone wrong, while the latter revolves around a K-pop concert turning into a bloody affair.

Halloween Horror Nights will take place on 14 select nights across five weekends. Each night will begin at 7.30pm. Standard tickets to this year’s Halloween Horror Nights are priced from $68, while early bird tickets are priced at $55 each from now till 5 September.
