Our favorite part of celebrity interviews is when they spill their beauty secrets, especially when those secrets involve DIYing at-home hair remedies on the cheap. Celebs, they’re just like us! In a recent interview with Byrdie, Zoe Saldana let us in on one of her favorite little tricks for natural highlights, and it’s probably in your liquor cabinet. It’s…RUM! Zoe is a woman after our own hearts!

We’ve toyed with the idea of putting alcohol in our hair before; beer, in particular, is famous for giving you bouncy, shiny hair — and goodness knows that when it comes to hair color inspo, champagne just can’t be beat! But rum just makes sense, you know? Especially given Zoe’s Dominican background!

Zoe tells Byrdie:

“In the islands, rum isn’t only for drinking. You can actually put rum on your hair. If you put it on your ends, you get sort of an ombre thing. Because with the sun, the rum bleaches your hair. That was sort of a natural way of getting highlights.”

Welp, we were already planning on stocking up on some rum for our delicious summer beverages, so we might as well just sprinkle some in our hair while we lay out by the pool!

Zoe always looks fierce and her hair is continually on point, so we will definitely be taking her tip to heart. And seeing as we’re all going to be investing in some rum for our hair, here’s our favorite rum cocktail recipe for those of you 21+!

Strawberry Basil Smack

Ingredients:
1 shot of rum
1 cup of strawberries, chopped
1 cup of basil, chopped
1/4 cup of sugar
Seltzer

Heat a pot on the stove over medium heat. Add strawberries, sugar, and basil and let them cook down, stirring often. After about 15 minutes, you should have a pretty mash-y concoction. Strain the contents of the pot into the jar, this will be your syrup. You can save the rest of the mash and use it as jam, or discard it.

Pour a couple tablespoons of the syrup into a glass, adding a shot of rum and the seltzer. Give it a nice stir and you’ve got a delicious and perfectly pink summer bevvie! This is all very free-form, feel free to eyeball it and add or substitute whatever you feel like! That’s it. Pour the remaining rum in your hair and go lay outside.

Bottoms up!

Have you ever put an alcoholic beverage in your hair?

It really works when it comes to lightening your hair and softening it up! Just remember that alcohol can be drying, so after you’ve laid out make sure you wash it out thoroughly and use a deep conditioner to keep those ends healthy. You can even find a special deep conditioner that is special for blonde hair to keep those fresh highlights looking bright and beautiful!
