Word Of Honour star Zhang Zhehan and Cliff Walkers actress Liu Haocun were crowned the most watched actors of the year in the 2021 Weibo Movie Awards Ceremony on Saturday (12 June).

Statistics from the Chinese microblogging site Weibo revealed that the 21-year-old rising talent Liu had been a hot topic among fans. Although she debuted only in 2020, Liu already had more than 2.5 billion views on Weibo topics related to her, with more than 500,000 comments.

Handpicked by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, the rookie actress has been touted as the next Gong Li. Apart from her debut film One Second, Liu has also worked with Zhang Yimou on the spy thriller Cliff Walkers, released in April this year.

On the other hand, Zhang Zhehan’s fanbase on Weibo had increased by more than 5.8 million this year. His newfound fame came after he starred as Zhou Zishu in the highly acclaimed boys’ love drama Word Of Honour.

When asked which director or actor he wanted to work with, Zhang initially answered Vicki Zhao, who is also his boss. But when prompted to choose from the guests present, Zhang joked that he was greedy and wanted to work with all the directors.

As Zhang’s career had began to pick up after 10 years in the industry, he reflected in a backstage interview, “Previously, it was like I was driving in a city, and now I’m on the highway.” The actor added that he was still adapting to his hectic schedule, but he could not stop now — even if he had to trade off some of his personal time.

Given the potential of both Zhang and Liu, it is interesting to see how their next projects will fare.
