Zayn Malik: ‘One Direction Changed Their Phone Numbers On Me’

When Zayn Malik sensationally quit One Direction last March in a bid to be a “normal 22-year-old”, we all kind of believed that no matter what happened he’d remain friends with his four former bandmates.

However, towards the end of last year Liam Payne admitted that he’d only just spoken to his old BFF, and now Zayn has admitted that despite repeatedly reaching out, his efforts have been ignored.

In a new interview the famously private singer opened up about his relationship with Liam, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, and admitted that it isn’t as healthy as he’d hoped.

When he announced that he was quitting the band, Zayn wrote that he’ll have “four friends for life” but speaking to Billboard magazine he admitted: “The truth of it is you can think one thing about a situation and the total opposite can happen.

“I had every intention of remaining friends with everybody, but I guess certain phone numbers have changed and I haven’t received calls from a lot of people.

“I’ve reached out to a few of them and not got a reply. Certain people have pride issues, but it’s stuff you overcome in time.”

Ouch, this is not what we wanted to hear.

To rub salt into the wound, Zayn also revealed that he didn’t even buy 1D’s fifth album, adding: “I’ll be honest. I thought the first single was quite cool.

“I heard the second single and [Billboard report that Zayn screwed up his face]. Yeah, I didn’t buy the album.”

In spite of all of the drama that surrounded Zayn’s departure from the band, the star was adamant that he did have fun during his four-and-a-bit whirlwind years of being a member of the biggest boyband in the planet.

He recalled: “I genuinely enjoyed [the band] and did whatever I could to be myself within that, but it’s just not where I sit as a musician.

“The other boys’ taste was generally indie rock. It’s good music, but I don’t f*ck with it. That was never cool where I was from.”

And with 2016 being the year that Zayn plans to unleash his solo music onto the world, we don’t have too long to wait and see the kind of music that he does think is cool.
