Zainal Abidin: People should have taken the message of "Hijau" seriously!

28 Dec – Datuk Zainal Abidin recently expressed disappointment over the fact that nobody took the message of his hit 1991 song, "Hijau" seriously enough to ensure sustainability.

Composed by Mukhlis Noor, the song relayed the message of environmental awareness. Zainal stated that the rapid development in the country has continuously threatened the environment and led to the severe flood disaster that hit the country this month.

"It's been 30 years since I delivered the message in "Hijau". I performed it in schools, universities, and government departments. They treated it like nothing more than an entertainment rather than an advice," he said.

Zainal, whose house near Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam was also affected by the flood, stated that such a natural disaster would not have occurred, at least not as severe, if everybody takes a cue from the message he conveyed.

"This is what we get when we don't dispose of garbage properly, build buildings without proper planning, build tall towers without careful drainage system and rampant illegal loggings," he said.

As for his losses during the flood, the singer stated that the ground floor of his three-storey house was submerged in water, with several of his vehicles could not be salvaged.

But Zainal said that it was the screams from nearby residents asking for help on the day of the incident that still haunts him.

"They live in single-storey houses, so their houses were completely submerged in water and they had to save themselves by climbing up the roof. I'm saddened by the fact that I was not able to help, what with the state of my own submerged residence. After all, the water levels were high, we can't afford to do anything," he said.
