As Netflix’s two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon prepares for take-off, Zack Snyder isn’t stopping with teases of his upcoming movie. The filmmaker has unveiled more details about its director’s cuts in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, and it’s going to be as R-rated as it gets.
“I’d written the script, in a vacuum just as I would was my normal aesthetic — a very hard, very like sexy, violent, crazy, everything’s all at 11,” he said. The original intent was to “collapse it onto a broader audience adventure”, but Netflix convinced him to go back to his “original subversive R-rated version”.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, that’d be great.’ And they go, ‘Then we could have like, you know, you could do your thing and we could have that as a separate piece of, you know, content,’” Snyder added.
Snyder later said, “I’m super proud of the PG-13 version of the movie. I really am. I think it’s really fun and it’s clean and cool but again, just the sort of weirdo darkness of the R-rated version if that was sort of my original thesis for what the movie could be, that’s what we did. That’s what we made in the R-rated version.”
Both Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire and Part Two: The Scargiver will have PG-13 ratings, but longer R-rated versions will be available to stream on Netflix at a later date. These director cuts also serve to flesh out Snyder’s new universe — in fact, it’s confirmed to share a connection with Snyder’s zombie film series Army of the Dead — and are set to be an hour longer with “big chunks of the movie that are different.”
“I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way,” the director said in an interview with Tudum. “The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it. It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version.”
Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire follows a young woman living in a peaceful colony on the outskirts of a galaxy who is tasked with finding warriors to fend off an impending invasion by the despotic Regent Balisarius. It premieres 22 December on Netflix and stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, and Michiel Huisman.
