If You’re Looking for a Sign to Try Out Locs, This Is It

From Cosmopolitan

In case you didn’t know, we’re really into locs here at The Braid Up. Even though other protective styles (think: braids and twists) get tons of attention, locs deserve just as much hype. Think about it: Locs are a fun and low-maintenance hairstyle that’s also super versatile. Like, they check off alllll the boxes—so what else could you need in a look? And if you aren’t totally sold just yet, our braid expert, Stasha Harris, is definitely about to sway you. After combing through The Braid Up archives, Stasha found three super-cute loc hairstyles for you to copy right TF now. Something tells me that these looks are going to be on your mood board ASAP.

Down to make the switch to locs? Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

1. If you opt for faux locs, use the wrapping method. With this approach, your natural hair is braided first, and you then wrap extensions around each braid to create the look of locs. Because this technique is so seamless, no one will be able to tell that your locs aren’t real.

2. Re-twist your locs with a hydrating curl cream. After a while, your locs will start to look a bit worn in. Freshen them up by using a moisturizing and light-hold cream to boost hydration while also adding definition.

3. Want to curl your locs? Grab some perm rods. After you make sure that you have enough curling rods on hand, wrap each individual loc around a thin perm rod. Once the curls fall, you’ll have more volume and bounce to your look.

4. Oil your scalp on the regular. Sure, locs are low maintenance compared to other protective styles, but that doesn’t mean you can take a hands-off approach. Massage a hair oil into your scalp on a daily basis to lock in moisture.
