Alexandra Petri was the youngest person to ever get a column with the acclaimed D.C. paper The Washington Post (at just 22-years-old!). Now, at 28, she runs their comedy blog ComPost (ha — get it?), and recently mused about her early success in a personal essay for Cosmopolitan.

And while Petri is undoubtedly uber-intelligent (she majored in English at Harvard and, as the Cosmo piece said, is the “overachieving only child of overachieving parents”) there’s something incredibly special about the way she approaches her work and being herself.

“The internet is this amazing space that shows that you can say your weirdest, truest thing that is most personal,” she said. “That thing that maybe zero people will get — but maybe nine people will get and it will be their favorite thing ever. So I just try to be nine people’s favorite thing rather than 100 people’s ninth favorite thing.

We think that deserves a repeat! “I just try to be nine people’s favorite thing rather than 100 people’s ninth favorite thing.” Basically, instead of watering herself down creatively to be “okay” to everyone, she follows her creative compass and makes a super strong impression on the people that get her.

this wasn't actually Halloween

HERE HERE! If you ask us, that’s kind of an amazing motto to live by — staying utterly true to yourself and knowing that whoever you make a connection with is truly connecting with YOU.

You can read the full essay here, and if you want more Petri, check out her book of personal humor essays (oh, yeah, she wrote a BOOK!), A Field Guide To Awkward Silences.

GET IT, GIRL!
